Went fishing this past Sunday. I caught a bass and it had a jig head hook hanging out of its butt hole. The area around the hole was red and swollen. This tells me that it tried to poop it out and it got stuck.

How u wrote that is hilarious. Read it 5 times now can't stop laughing.
Did you end up pulling it out?

i caught one in a tournament once and it had a rusty offset worm hook sticking out of its ass and the top part of a dark colored senko sticking out of its gullet. pretty gross but amazing it was still alive...and eating.

i couldn't pull the hook out. it would've really messed the fish up.

Did you add the jig-head to the tackle box and use it? lol

So I hit Sprague pond for an hour or so before work this morning... I caught a big bass on a senko, and I guthooked him... DAMN!!!!

3 other respectable fish, all senkos...

I do my best to not let them sit, but I thought it was a little guy running with it, so I gave him a while to make sure I could stick him good. I cut the line right at the eyelet of the hook.

I did pull the jig head out of its butt. It was lead.I did save the jig head and put it in my tackle box to throw away. When i gullet hook fish i do a little surgery to get the hook out.I use a small pair of sharp scissors.I pull up on the line which pulls the skin up enough to cut the skin around the hook.It is a minor cut and removes the hook without much damage and the skin goes back down into the throat so it is not exposed and should heal.Better than leaving the hook in.I have caught several fish with hooks still in the gullet and removed them this way.

OK, I'll weigh in on this. Early success on Senkos got me into bass fishing a few years ago and gave me confidence whether justified or not. Have gradually worked on learning new techniques from there (this year it's drop shot). Won 4 Kayak Tourneys in a row last year using all Senko but none of them were big bags. I've caught the most fish on Senkos (although Drop Shot is now not far behind) and some good ones but biggest have been on Jerkbaits and Lipless cranks. As far as the gut hook issue, I've worked hard to avoid this. Here's how I deal with it: 1) Use hi-vis yellow braid with leader to watch floating line closely, 2) Keep rod tip up to feel for subtle strikes, 3) Don't let Senko sit for more than a second or so before continuing retrieve, 4) When feel fish weight, set hook immediately, 5) Don't fish weightless Senko in heavy wind, 6) If all your best intentions fail, learn to do the turn the hook upside down hook removal. Can't remember the last time I had a fish die with a Senko.

How can that be? Everything in this thread say's you can't possibly do all these things with a senko, or learn using or senko - and yet that's what you did; and we all believe what we read on the internet form these folks that say you can't, and so it must be the truth. Hahahahah

Try one rod and just one senko, or any lure for that mater, and I bet you learn even more. Better yet, tie a string to stick and try it. Or instead of angling for the biggest fish, try for the smallest. Or try for the most variety. Angling ain't just what you see on TV or in tournaments or read about on the internet. Some of the best angling is much more basic.

Most of the opinions people post here, including mine, are representative of only a very small sample of what's possible, only the types of fishing they do, or the types of people/fishing they see or do, and are not at all representative of what's real or possible. This thread is a great example of that. To suggest you can't do or learn something with a particular bait, that it's only for the mindless, is closed-minded, ridiculous and irresponsible. I have no love for the senko or any bait as much as some of these folks have for themselves.

Bartender? Another please....

I caught a fish today with a senko sticking out of it's mouth like 1/2 in it's stomach. I thought for sure I'd be trying to remove a hook. Fortunately it appeared to be whacky rigged and he only had the worm. It came out easy enough. Weird how it was still trying to eat

I keep a pair of scissors for that purpose too, but in my case it's a pair of my kids old blunt baby scissors (in case I drop them off the kayak!). It does less damage to cut some skin than trying to yank the hook out of the flesh. Crushing the barbs is the way to go, I hate destroying a fish to get the hook out, especially if it's a treble and multiple points are embedded.

I was fishing in the Quag the other day with a wacky rigged senko and the fish kept just pulling the worm and ring off the hook. Very annoying and a waste of good money. It's going to be some time before I use senkos, right now I'm going to switch to crank bait and see how that goes.
