It's not the bait or the hook it's the angler. Learn to watch your line and use a small Octupus hook and you will not gut hook fish. One reason some anglers don't like Senko type baits is they think their to good to throw them. When the bite is tuff they do catch fish. I myself barley throw them but if that's what you like to throw have at it . Also the O Ring set up keeps a lot of those baits out of the water too.

What size Octopus hook would you recommend with the wacky O ring setup? Does anyone else use Octopus hooks?

This thread was huge.. I throw a senko when nothing else seems to be working myself..However, I weight them, wacky rig with an o-ring and pick up and drop them or walk them like a jig on the bottom.. I've only been fishing for a couple years so I'm sure I'm doing many things wrong. I have never gut hooked a fish on a senko. I have with a horny toad only one, so sad. my .02cents.. throw what works for you for the water you are fishing and the conditions that day.

I think it's a #1 it's a small hook but I've caught fish up to 7 lbs with them. I use the Gamakatsu hooks. Good luck.

Caught at least 2 over 5 pounds this year with them. At least 50, if not 100, all together with them in 2014... No fatal gut hooks on my end... I chuck them in deep cover...

I can jig, throw spinners, etc. etc... I never even tried a senko until last year. They're great in scummy, boggy, beaver ponds and pools, and pads where you can't fish cranks and such... Produce better than frogs for me too.

We wacky rig them (and most worms/sluggo type plastics) with the O-ring and weedless #2 hook…or Texas rig them…so we can toss in some heavy cover etc.
I have had one major gut hook issue that I can remember over the last few years…and that was with a gator pickerel.

I have had a few minor gut hook issue with my frogs and trailer hook setup with bass over the last few seasons. The smaller weedless hooks/trailer hooks work well and enable you to typically remove a gut hook with success and save the fish.

Went fishing this past Sunday. I caught a bass and it had a jig head hook hanging out of its butt hole. The area around the hole was red and swollen. This tells me that it tried to poop it out and it got stuck.
So it's not only the type of bait you use that the fish can swallow, it is the lure that they can swallow too. What if this was spinnerbait stuck in its mouth?. I use Senko's and have had good luck with them. My personal best 7lb 50z was caught on a senko. I do use other lures and once you find a pattern, then you use that particular lure if it is a Senko or otherwise. I like to catch Fish period!!!
I will take dink fish all day as long as I'm catching fish. I fish for the sport and fun of fishing.Use whatever floats your boat as far as I'm concerned. All lures are expensive today.Being a mostly weekend fisherman,i will spend whatever on whatever to catch fish.Learning new techniques and using different lures and baits is great if I wanted to be a professional fisherman.Lets do a fish off with some people and some will use just Senko's and some will use just jigs, and so on. Lets see the results Razz

Was it a lead free jig?

The fish off idea goes against what some of the guys are saying. It's not about just one bait.

if you are a recreational bass fisherman like me you don't have to be one dimensional. its simple and no ones trying to make you a professional.
worms are for catching fish all sizes
jigs will get you big ones
frogs are for entertainment

I had to give up on frog fishing! (soft body type) The only thing I hook into is snapping turtles! I have much better luck with the buzz frog type.
