Ok so you just bought the boat and are dying to get on the water but first there are some things you have to take care of. Most of you know that you have to register the boat and if it's trailered then that needs a registration too. Did you know that the trailer registration expires every year in November? What kind of scam is the state running here? Did you know that you have to pay excise tax on your trailer? I never even considered that. In my case that's another $150. If you're doing it like me and getting a jon boat and doing a conversion then just be prepared for all the little things that just pile up on you.

My boat is just about done. I may try to register it today or tomorrow. Another 40 bucks (not including the sales tax I still have to pay). I just can't wait until the ice clears and I'm out there getting my money's worth. So when considering buying a used boat that you plan on converting or fixing up, remember that there are a lot of little things that add up.

And if you buy a used boat, no matter what is on the Bill of Sale the state gets to tell you what it is worth and how much you will pay.

Mass don't like seeing folks get a good deal and need their cut. Mad

yep but boat registrations are actually good for 2 years just like cars. so thats a plus side. re-registering the trailer is i think 60$ every year, excise tax on the trailer is short money so thats almost painless. and as most of the boat owners here know or will find out out what boat stands for....

i always think about cartoppers/kayaks because of the ease that comes with it over trailered boats

I've heard the break out another thousand before too. Lol I considered it would be more. That's why I didn't trailer last year but car topping is a different kind of pain in the a$$

As someone that has been looking for a boat, new or used, it has been painful. The used junk out there is just that, junk. I'm planning on my kids being with me on the water and some of the junk on Craigslist has been barely worthy to be put in a swimming pool safely.

Looking for new boats is an adventure all it's own. Dealers are right up there with car dealers and CONgress for slime. I went to a fish & game show a while ago in NH, saw a boat even the misses liked, asked what the cash price was, the "salesperson" stated it was the same, stating further they make their money on financing. Great. Last I checked the economy wasn't exactly stellar, but it must be for boat dealers. Who doesn't take cash these days to trim the 10%-20% markup?

As I looked around, all the dealers were the same, cash price was the same, no "deals". It may be a long journey to Spring for those of us in the market for a boat. I may end up going without just in principle, as this is more of a "want" than a "need" for my family. Reading the above posts, I'm sure as MA decides where to find new revenue, I'm thinking more taxes coming on items we use/need, cars/recreational items.

The quest to find a boat has been very frustrating needless to say, and the customer service for manufacturers has sucked. Some don't even respond to inquires, or just direct to scumbag dealers you don't want to go to in the first place.

Ya I've heard that about the boat dealers before. Who doesn't take cash?

Posted Mon Feb 25, 2013 11:22 am

What advantage is it to a dealer to take cash? When you finance something they get paid right away from the finanace company anyway plus they get a vig from the finance company. Giving a dealer cash is no insentive for a dealer to drop the price. They get nothing out of the transaction that they would not get whatever way you paid for it. It used to be, way back in the day before computers that a dealer might be able to "fudge " a sale (s) and a cash business was an asset to a business person. Today, especially for big ticket items like boats, those days are LONG GONE!!

i got my jon boat at bass pro and it was a normal process. i already knew what the price was and the whole transaction didn't take long so i didn't feel like it was like buying a car. they take care of all the paperwork for you and even fill the sales tax out for you so you have that paperwork/receipt already prepped to hand over when you get the boat registered. all i had to do was take a photo of the Hull ID, print it, and bring all of the required documents.

also, you get 1 year of their VIP membership if you buy a boat so you get some good savings on any other purchases. it's 20% off any BPS brand gear which was good since I had to buy seats and other accessories.

registration for just the boat itself isn't bad either since you do it once and it's good for 2 years to date and you can renew online. i didn't want to do the trailer thing

That's pretty straight forward Sam. I was surprised most about the trailer reg only being good until November and having to pay excise tax on it

Posted Mon Feb 25, 2013 12:41 pm

dont get me started on excise tax - i bought a new car that banrupted me almost then i got the first excise tax bill and i almost flipped

sales tax + state tax and then badum tsss + excise tax

on 27 k i paid 700$ fkn excise tax - and i calles watertown and they like yeah it's for the roads - am i like hmm shloud i pay less then - new car less wear rite ? she like ahahah no u have 30 days

this year i am down to only 400 $

deval - tax it all
