The whole excise tax thing is a total scam. Roads suck everywhere around here

Seeing the numbers that you posted and then realizing I paid about 300 bucks for excise on my car $150 for a trailer seems excessive so I looked up how it's calculated. Since I suck at math I can't figure out exactly what it should be but the calculator says 25 per 1000 so if the trailer cost 800 bucks brand new in 2012 then there's no way I should be paying 150. should be less than 25 bucks. Time to make some calls.

For those looking at buying used boats, here is something to consider. Unfortunately, I didn't learn this till after the purchase. I bought my boat from a guy in NH. In order to register it, you need proof of sales tax. Obviously, I based it on what I paid for the boat motor and trailer. Wrong. The tax is based upon the price of the boat not the boat motor and trailer. If I ever do this again, I will have the seller print up 3 separate bills of sale.

its probably just because its fairly new. if you want sympathy for the money your spending to get the boat squared away, GOOD LUCK now your in the same boat as alot of us are!! pun intended!

after its all done youll forget about it after your hook up on your first fish on the new rig

It hurts the 1st few years in MASS: An excise at the rate of $25 per one thousand dollars of valuation (effective 1/1/81) is levied on each motor vehicle.

Figures are the manufacturers’ list prices for vehicles in their year of manufacture. Present market value, price paid, or condition are not considered for excise tax purposes.

The formula is as follows:

In the year preceding the model year
(brand new car released before model year)
50%

In the model year
90%

In the second year
60%

In the third year
40%

In the fourth year
25%

In the fifth and succeeding years
10%

I'm not dissing jon boat mods at all...I actaully think when done correctly they can be an awesome means to fish. For me, I chose to keep it simple. Instead of spending a couple grand on upgrading my 14 foot jon boat, I spent 50 bucks and build a removable deck, and a few hundred dollars on a used 3.5 HP motor that only weighs 38lbs and has a built in gas tank. I took the $2400 I could have spend on a boat and bought a used chevy truck that has been mint for me the last year as a second vehicle (insurance is only 300 bucks a year). Helps out with yard duties and my boat is light enough for me to load and unload on my own when I take it out fishing. I personally didn't want to deal with the trailer and other things that go with it. Keep it simple and easy is my philosophy. But......hopefully in the next year I'll get a big boy boat...my wife may control the purchase as a speed boat is what she wants for lounging and water sports.....we'll see!

When I got my boat registered it was the biggest pain in the A$$ ever. I didnt know you couldnt register the boat at the RMV or I needed my trailer insured even thou your vehicle insurance covers it. Then I go to boston to the EPO building to register the boat with just my debit card and paper work since I never carry cash, only to discover they dont take plastic... FML lol.

Then a couple months later I get a bill for excise tax for 1400 for both my vehicles and I almost fell out of my seat. Then I found a loop hole and didn't have to pay so I was happy again lol.
