Kayak Krushin With The Force...getting Dangerous With A Cast Net.
Had my best kayak day, quantity wise, at a little local hole. I hit this spot a handful of times from shore last summer, and I caught maybe two bass. I even chucked shiners out there... A friend pulled out a handful of 3 and 4 pounders the previous summer, but I was coming up snake eyes.
I put in once a couple weeks ago for 2 hours and lost a monster largemouth (above 5), who gave me two chances (once on a topwater frog and once on a 7" Gary Yamamotto). I also put on the fish finder, and I was puzzled to see loads of fish between 10 and 20' down. The place drops deep quick.
Me and my buddy put in Sunday morning at 5:45 after we couldn't lug our kayaks into the first hole.
I got a couple little taps... By 7, I settled on a creature bait and decided to crawl the shore. I worked it extra deep for a minute. Wham! A nice crappie. I was pumped. I love those little bastards, and I found out what was hanging out down deep (my guess was perch). First I ever heard of there.
I chilled out, put on tunes, and the grove, the force--whatever--was with me. About 10 bass over the next hour or so. Most were small, but that was A-OK. I was kicking this place after it kicked me one-too-many times. Getting a good grove with the kayak too.
My buddy Jr did allright. I thought for sure he'd wipe the place clean of the big boys... Next time.
Best bass was 1.5-2lbs.
Another for the highlight reel was my first with a cast net Saturday evening... I bought one about a week ago, and had no clue how much technique it took. I started with a huge one, and my good friend Phil met me at a swamp for a quick tutorial (He's chucked them for 30-some-odd years.) I tried a couple throws before he made it, and it It was a nightmare. He suggested 1) I go somewhere else without so much sh*t in the water--which I ignored 2) take it back, get a smaller one and 3) spend hours practicing in the yard with Youtube videos. I couldn't take it back and was damn sure I'd get it done. I put in a good few, frustrating practice sessions. After getting damn-near perfect spreads with a 12' net on my lawn, I headed back to the pond and grabbed a sunfish with throw #2. For throw #1, I had to pull in a tree I snagged up on. I didn't see any fish, I just threw it where I thought I wouldn't ruin my net... I'm going to get live perch for picks, pike, and muskies. Dying to find golden shiners. Saltwater baitfish coming soon.
