1st off I would like to thank Smoke and Johnny for their endless efforts and putting together another successful MAFF tourney season. We certainly couldn't do it without you gentlemen.

As always, we should strive to make next year even better, so if anyone has any realistic suggestions, please use this as the forum to present them.

Topic 1: Starting on time

The only thing that really bothered me this season was when 14 teams were in the water, and we waited 20minutes for a team or 2 that was running late (not even talking about Boone and the launch nightmare).

If Smoke and Johnny say the tourney start time is 7:00am...the tourney should start at 7:00am. We should not have to hold up the tourney for 1 team. They can launch when they arrive and pay smoke during the weigh in.

As for yesterday, i don't even know if we waited for someone running late, but if we did, that shouldn't happen. Teams arrived at 5:30 as they were told, and sat in there boats until almost 8. That is a brutally long time to wait to fish. It seemed like 16 boats were on the water ready to fish at 7, so i assume we were waiting on a few teams running late. I know Smoke and Johnny are too nice of guys to be jerks about it, but we should be stern on this topic..I know s*** happens, but i personally wouldn't want you guys to wait for me to arrive if im running late, and i assume many of you feel the same way. Launch on time, and if a team is late, they will catch up.

Just my opinion on that...we all look forward to these tourneys, so maximizing our time on the water is certainly important.

Topic 2: Lake Boone

Yesterday certainly showed us a few things.

1. We should never have 20 teams at Boone, the launch is the worst of any lake we use, especially since we have to taxi guys back and fourth. We should Max out at 10-12 teams at Boone.

2. Aside from the tourney earlier this year at Boone that didn't count, we have had 2 tournaments there in the last 2 years, both in October. I LOVE Boone and think its a great lake, i would suggest next year we switch up the date on Boone, to allow us to fish it during the peak fishing months, rather than the cold, end of season month of October. I cant imagine the bags we would pull if we fished Boone in Late June.

Topic 3: Payouts

I enjoy that there are more than 1 way to win a little cash in these tourneys. It is certainly appreciated by most of us since the LandLords or Hawg Hunters usually win 1st and lunker..and the Hookers always place as well.. With that said, it think we should revert back to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Lunker...4th place pay out is pretty cool, but its kind of like these pathetic towns forcing there little league baseball teams not to keep score...so no one wins or loses...What a joke that is......There is no medal in the Olympics for placing 4th, you probably wont give your kid a crisp $20 for getting a D+ in gym...same should apply here...Add more loot to the top finishers!

Topic 4: Season Results

I think you should have to participate in ATLEAST 1/3 of the tourneys to qualify. A few teams in the top 5 that only made 2 tourneys out what 8? or 9?. Of course there average is going to be great....Those teams should be placed at the bottom until they qualify..move the rest of us that fished all types of lakes, rivers, and conditions up in the power rankings!

Im just trying to spark up some conversation for next year to maybe improve what is already an UNBELIEVABLE tournament structure thanks to all the hard work by Smoke and Johnny . Im already looking forward to it. Hopefully everyone understands these are merely suggestions, and i literally have 0 "complaints." I look forward to fishing with some of you on the Ice..and the rest of you next April....

Great topic Napa.

I agree with all ur suggestions and here are some of mine.

1. 7 am start time if your late you get a 1lb penalty. But the tourney starts without ya anyway.Just pay after.
2. We should donate a couple bux extra and buy a real scale and weigh in after boats are on trailers.
3. Pick some smallmouth waters!
4. Try a night tourney 5pm - midnight?

I agree with some if these. when i started doing these tourneys last year it was just for fun, period. the reason i haven't and won't start a club is becasue of two many politics. now i enjoy and appreciate your pasion, and we need to fine tune a few things.

Starting on time, yesterday was boone and we new that was going to happen becasue of that ramp, everyone was early if not on time. it's just boone. next year boone will be limited to 12 teams and we will do two of them, one early and one late.

we have actually had a few teams over the season run late and meet up with us on the water were we have collected and done livewell checks, no big deal. to say if a team is late they are penalized is to much, see club rules, (don't want em)

we all know about boone and that was a poor decision on my part to have it for the last tourney, but when scheduled 1)i never expected for these things to blow up like they have and have so many people interested.
2) we didn't plan for the team on team aspect till mid season, and smoke has already said we won't do that again at boone, lol

Payouts, are intention was to chancge payouts as more people came so everyone could make a little.
but i agree we will i think have three payouts plus lunker.
and we simply cannot overload the tourneys. we have to stay with like a max of 14 - 15 boats per.

Season results will not play as big of a part next year i don't think. if people want to keep track they can keep track. we only did that for the last team on team tournament so we could have captains.
again this isn't club kept numbers were running, again see club rules (don't want em)

Back to basics ( FISH )
next year ten tournaments, three payouts plus lunker, car top tourneys as well thrown in between other tourneys.

I'm here to fish with some good people and try to make a couple of bucks doing it.

as napa said my thoughts and opinions doesn't have to be rule, but if we try to get to fancy and club like I'M DONE!.

fish on.

jay we have done the scale thing at the ramp last year, Billington sea. Chuck has one at work and said we could use it i think.

i have always liked the weigh in on the water only becasue it releases the fish in a quicker manner being out there. and most of the places we fish the ramps are either to small for all of us to wait.t feels it chokes up the ramp to much.
we can certainly take a vote on it and decide.

we will absolutly come up with some smallie mix tourneys. i love catching smallies.
and also i love the night idea as well, we'll work on that.

Like everyone else, I really appreciate the hard work Justin and Johnny put into organizing these things. The team tournament structure, laid back atmosphere, and great group of guys makes these things a lot of fun. I'm in a bass club, and this is really a great way to fish tournaments more for fun and not have to worry about politics, rules, or the disadvantage of fishing out of the back of someone's boat (while that person may be in the running for angler of the year or something like that). Side note: I'm certainly not bad mouthing Johnny or Justin about picking Boone at all and I don't think anyone else is either.

Topic 1: Starting on time

Agreed about the starting time. Obviously things come up, or you might get lost and that's fine, just call someone to let them know. Not sure how I feel about consequences like a weight penalty but I'd be fine for whatever most people agree on. I would say either the weight penalty or they just fish whenever they get in the water.

Topic 2: Lake Boone

The Boone launch situation was pretty bad. I think one team was running late b/c they got lost but it didn't even matter because when they showed up, they ended up having to wait at the store for an hour while the other boats were launching. Cabin Fever was one of the last boats to launch and in this case, I can definitely blame the launch 100%. The last boat could've showed up at the launch at 7:30 and still would've had to wait for the last boat to head over and launch. I don't think we could've gotten all the boats in any faster no matter what and had to go with the assembly line style operation unfortunately.

Topic 3: Payouts

I'd be fine for what Napa said.

Topic 4: Season Results

Do you get anything other than pride if you end the year in top 3 or something like that? Don't know but I'm just wondering.

Either way - I'd agree with this too. If yesterday's tournament bag size counts for these final standings, Cabin Fever's average from 2 tournaments would definitely go from 3 lb. or so to like 6 lb. I don't think that's very fair even though it would boost the team standings.

First off, I just started enjoying this site this spring. There are a great group of people here and the information shared here is amazing. I would love to participate in some tournaments next year, but due to family commitments (2 and a half year old twins) and work commitments, it would be difficult to hit all of your dates. Would you consider an alternate pool for teams that may have a team member drop out at the last minute?

Thanks,

Charlie

lets not overcomplicate everything here......

if you're late its your problem, get there and fish and pay when you see Johny or smoke.

my vote is for top 3 and lunker..no 4th place.

stats mean nothing but they are cool to see how everyone does. I like them. It is listed how many tourneys each teams fish. If you fish one tourney and bring in a 15 pound bag, great. It is listed you fished only 1, you were king for that day and not the season. If there were prizes or cash it would be a different story. Maybe we can list all teams and all stats but not do it like a leader board.

Obviously Boone is tough and not the best place for the team vs team stuff. Live and learn, we pick a new place next time.

these things are awesome and we can iron out any bugs as we go.

I certainly don't want to change the atmosphere that we have going, as far as politics, ext, so i agree with Johnny on that aspect. I fish in these for the enjoyment of friendly competition with awsome anglers, and the bonus is a chance at some prizes and some smack talk material!

I think if your late you should just get to start without a weight penalty. Your already behind in time, so that's a penalty in itself.

It wasnt really my intention to harp on the mess at Boone. While it was BRUTAL, we all knew it was going to happen. But we have started late a few times while waiting for teams, most recently Chocituate in Natick. My main point was intended for all of us, not directed at Johnny or Smoke. We have people who get up at 4am to make it to these tourney's on time. If we are going to wait until everyone arrives, ill just sleep until 6 and roll up around 7 15 with no worries! just kidding! We should just launch at the time Smoke and Johnny specify. If its 6 30...then once 6 30 hits, we should angle on, including them. They shouldn't have to stand on shore waiting for the late arrivals either.

As for Season Results...its nothing but pride and bragging rights..no prizes or anything. But if smoke is going to keep track, mine as well make it as accurate as possible ya know. Just for our own purposes. look, we are all here for fun, and the love of fishing. But no one can act like they arent here to try to win and talk some smack!! Thats what its all about!!!!!!!

I also would love a night tourney...would be pretty sweet. Although the chances of our canoe getting run over by the Landlords or another big boat are pretty good, but its worth it.

First let me say that Alex & I greatly enjoyed being in the 2 tourneys we fished this year. What I like best is that its not a club.
Like some people on this forum I don't have enough time to fish all or most of the tourneys (which I would love to do!) I've contacted some local clubs & didn't get the warm response I got from meeting all of you. So, these tournaments have been a good learning experience for myself & my son & that's what I was really looking for.

So, going in what's been posted so far.

1. start times: If its 6:30 then its 6:30. If your a half hour late then that's your time lost. (boone is the exception)

2. payouts: I'm a long way from being in the payouts. So, 1st-3rd & lunkers is OK with me.

3. Mixing up times & small mouth waters: YES! Cartopper tourneys I like that idea!

4. Stats: I use this forum for my personal stats. Maybe there could a separate stats page on your profile to keep tourney stats if you want?

I'm already dreading the winter & are looking forward to next year!!

I agree with Johnny about not wanting to have club like rules!
I try not to fish with people like that.

I also agree with napa and johnny about no penalty for being late. I realized after i mentioned. I have been penalized for being 3 minutes late before.
But the start time should still be when we can start fishing and if your late no biggie you just miss some time. i like that.

I don't mind weighing on the water just thinking of a more efficient way?

Good ideas! this is a great thread!

Some random thoughts, in no particular order:

Start times are start times. If you're late, you lose the time. This should be all the "punishment" needed. The tournament gets underway as planned, as best as is possible. In the case of this Sunday, it just so happened that it took forever to get everyone launched. Everyone had shown up by the time the last few boats rolled down to the ramp. It took forever to get off the water too, to the point where most people had left by the time Sam and I (last boat out) got to the store at the end of the day.

I would love to do a mix of water (LM/SM, weedy/rocky, clear/stained etc), to get a taste of everything. I think the main challenge there is the type of water immediately available in the area. Figure out what the breaking point is for people, in terms of driving time to the place. This will help with picking waters for next year, and we can then figure out how to get some variety.

As we saw at Boone, the ramp conditions really matter. Or, more specifically, the parking conditions. The car topper tournaments can be a bit more flexible, but it's a pain to try and park 10+ trailers off-site. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do, but it sounds like Johnny is already thinking about these things, and I have faith in his decision-making abilities.

I'm not too worried about paying 1-4 or 1-3 and lunker. Both have advantages. My preference is that we try to keep this casual and fun, not a big money thing. Personally, I'd fish even if it was the $5 that was the original suggestion for these things. It's the bragging rights and the chance to meet people that I care for =)

I think a night tournament would be fun, but there are a lot more safety concerns involved. As long as we can find a way to make it happen without endangering people, I am all for it.

Above all else, let's keep it simple and have some fun.

Topic 1: Starting on time

I definately agree about the starting time. The launch time is the launch time. We were late once and met Johnny out on the water to pay the tourney fee and do a livewell check. It happened, we were pissed at ourselves and we lost out on some fishing time, so it was on us. Bottom line, being on time is a benefit to yourself. Don't make the others suffer.

Topic 2: Lake Boone

What can you say about the Boon? It is what it is and having a tourney at the beginning and end is still fine by me. Limiting teams may be an answer, but would we necessarily have had so many teams if this wasn't the "World Series", so to speak? I put my total trust in the consensus to determine the best way. This is a great group of guys (and gals occaisionally).

Topic 3: Payouts

I like 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Lunker.

Topic 4: Season Results

Smoke does a phenominal job keeping the stats and it is definately appreciated by this angler! I like to see how I (we) compare against the field. It only makes me better and hone my skills more and that just means more bad news for the fish Wink

If Smoke doesn't mind continuing to do so, I like it. I'd even volunteer to help Smoke if you wanted or needed assistance. 5 tourney (regular, full field) minimum or half of total if more, seperate from any cartopper stuff, sounds fair to me. Again, whatever the consensus is, I'm on board!

You guys all have fun on the ice. That at this particular time is not my 1st or 2nd choice, but never say never. Tight lines to everyone!

Posted Mon Oct 04, 2010 2:49 pm

a lot of good ideas here and i think some things will just come down to what most people want. if stats are only for tracking, maybe it should stay the way it is but definitely show the number of tournaments fished. either way is fine with me. i think the most important thing is to make sure these stay fun. like i mentioned, i'm in a club and i really like it, but i also like fishing these tournaments with the people on here because it's completely different. it's good to be able to do both and mix it up. as long as things stay fun and don't get complicated with a lot of rules, bylaws, politics, or things that could turn into people getting pissed at each other everything should be good.

Johny and Smoke thanks again for all you HARD work this year!

Napa you missed your calling!!!

First: Lets not forget why we all do this, to fish and get away from the wives and real world for a while.

Second: Start time

Start time is what's posted by Smoke and Johny, If your late pay at the end. Why do we get screwed because you over slept?

Third:Pay outs

1st ,2nd, 3rd places and lunker that should be a NO brainer.

Fourth:Season Results/Qualifying

You should have to fish more than a third-half of this tournys to qualify for the end of the season, Also I like see'n where by team is among the field, so please keep that on the site.

These are just my thoughts, again Team Why Not Now just want to have fun!

Posted Mon Oct 04, 2010 6:54 pm

I agree with everything said.I kind of liked the stats,it was cool to see how teams did. They give the guys at the top the braggin rights they deserve and the guys like me who pull one out of their @$$ once our 5 mins of glory lol thats it,they meant nothing else(not putting down smokes hard work)but am I wrong or did I miss something?Just my .02 on the stats.Dont have any complaints and thought everything was great.I came in late and only got 4 in with you guys but didnt think any changes were needed,if a peticular spot needs limiting than so be it
