Now that the season is over I can focus on preparing for the next year. I decided to finally get a fishfinder for my boat. I wanted to get input from you guys - if you have a fishfinder can you share what you like and don't like about it. At this point I don't have any preference, I'm totally to open to any type and brand. Any input will be highly appreciated.

what is your price range? i like lowrance.

My budget would be $700. Which Lowrance unit is the best in that price range?

i have a Gen2 HDS-5. it's a great unit for that price range. although i don't have down or side imaging, i use the internal GPS a lot. i've had humminbird in the past and can't complain about their products either.

Lowrance Elite 7 HDS will give you a 7" screen, Downscan, and gps...processer just runs a little slower than the gen 1/2 if your running 70+mph

So HDS 5 and Elite 7 are the 2 best Lowrance models. What about Humminbird and Garmin?

What type of boat is it going on and where do you want to mount it?

Are you deep water fishing?

The display will be mounted on the bow, the transducer will be transom mounted. I fish in shallow lakes, no deep water fishing.

I fish a lot of shallow lakes. IMO you don't need to spend a ton of money as you'll probably just be using it to find depth changes and water temps

if its going to be mounted on the bow, I would run the ducer on the TM.

I agree with shawn that you dont need something with all the bells and whistles. I prefer lowrance over humminbird, but both are quality brands.

you don't really need to spend $600 if you're just fishing shallow water. a few hundred would probably do you fine.

So are you getting an HDS-7 or 8 or 10 for xmas? I may offer you a couple of bills for that 5

Just googled the hds-5 to see if there were any good deals and this popped. http://lr.factoryoutletstore.com/details/0-46892/lowrance-hds-5x-gen2-w-83-200khz.html?cid=82530&chid=4272&gclid=C

This page: http://www.fishfinders.info/lowrance-hds5-gen2 has a price comparison table. Looks like West Marine has the best deal on HDS5 - $499 - but I don't know that's the transducer you're looking for.
