Hi guys,

I know a lot of you have GoPros. I've got the itch to record myself slaying hogs (or dinks for that matter).

I've been looking at the whole line of cameras and I'm trying to decide between the cheap Hero or something a little more feature packed like the Hero 3+.

Can some of you who already made the investment steer me in the right direction? My gut says that the Hero is probably good enough for me but the tech nerd says I need something a little better.

Has anyone bought the SJCAM? ( http://www.sjcam.com/en/home/27-sjcam-sj4000-wifi-1080p-full-hd-action-camera-sport-dvr.html )

This looks like a good alternative but it sounds like the audio is crap on these. How is the audio on the GoPro?

Any input is appreciated.

I have the hero black 3. I got an awesome deal on it on amazon a couple of years ago. Otherwise I would have got th white or silver. When it's in the waterproof case you have to be close for it to pick up the audio.

Thanks for the info Shawn. That Black 3 is pretty amazing but I can't justify the price to myself (or my wife for that matter).

I'm leaning towards the cheap Hero just to get my feet wet and decide if I want to make a bigger investment in the future.

Can anyone comment on the Wifi and if it's really a must have feature?

thanks

Wifi is only reason that your phone can be act like remote on gopro. After all, its free. You need to download the gopro app on your phone. Anyway, I refused to pay 60-80dollars for gopro remote or any kind of stuffs.

Just my two cent, DONT buy memory card less than 64gb! It was my mistake. I paid 32gb and have problems with it such as limited minute of footage(max 20 minutes then it will shut off) and battery died quickly than I used them(3 hours). (I know it has no relate with memory card but I felt it was.) Because once I paid 64gb memory card, it took an hour of footage before its shut off itself. Plus my battery lasts me up to 6-7 hours.

But if you dont plan to fish hard like I am, maybe that 32gb is right for you.

I use the wifi about half the time. The gopro app is awesome. Easy to use and makes filming a little easier as the gopro doesn't have a screen to see what you're shooting. To follow up on aquaman's comment about the memory card, all cards are not created equal. Go on gopro's website to see the recommended cards.

Yep, I forget to mention that I have Silver GoPro hero 3.

Yes, I have an older model of the SJAM, as well as a GoPro Black. The SJ was on sale on Amazon at the time. The model I have doesn't have wifi, but the model with wifi is in the mail as we speak.

Honestly, having used both, there is hardly a difference. Definitely not a $200-$300 difference. The audio is roughly the same as the GoPro, and I've never had an issue with it. It shoots absolutely the same quality video as a $400 GoPro. Yes, there are probably a few minor catergories the GoPro is better in, but you have to decide how much more you are willing to pay for those.

If I were to buy another, I'd 100% go with the SJCAM. Plus, at the price of a GoPro, you could buy 3 or 4 Sj's! Cover your slab-catching from all angles!

Buy it on Amazon (or wherever else), and just return it if you aren't happy and buy a GoPro. But I'd definitely try the $100 camera before you go for the GoPro.

This was something I was concerned with. I saw info stating that the SJCAM's Mic was terrible when in the waterproof case but it sounds like the GoPro is just as bad.

Do you guys have solutions for capturing audio on the water or just deal with the low quality?

Also, does the SJCAM use a different mount system then GoPro or are they compatible? My kayak has a built in GoPro mount I was hoping to be able to use.

Thanks for the great info!

I was considering getting another gopro but after checking out the sjcam I'll probably get one of those. Looks like it's compatible with the gopro clamps. Only thing is there appears to be original sjcam and then fakes. Gotta make sure you're getting what you want.

Yea, I think I'm going to get one too. I've been watching YouTube Videos/Reading reviews and it looks like the 4000 Wifi would be fine for me.

Like you said, gotta watch out for the knock offs. It seems like they don't have the SJCAM name on them.

Watched a review on the 5000 and it sounds like it's a little buggy and the difference isn't that big of a deal.

Honestly, the audio isnot that bad. I've been able to understand every word in my videos so far.

Yes they are compatible with GoPro mounts.

As far as fakes, just buy from a well known site (AAmazon, etc.) And you should be fine.

My first waterproof camera was a Kodak playsport. It shot excellent video but the doors it had for the battery and memory card weren't great. I personally wouldn't spend that much on a Kodak after owning 2 playsport and door related battery issues with both of them. I just threw them on a shelf

I have a hero 3 black I think. It's the most expensive one I would be up for selling to ya. I have only used it a handful of times and have tons of mounts and accessories. WiFi remote led screen and a lot more mounts and parts. If your interested shoot me a message
