Ive personally never caught a Pike and saw some catches at the Concord River tourney.

Aside from the obvious, size, what is the difference between these 2 spieces. Color? Spottings? ext. How can you tell which is which if you catch say a small 16inch Pike/Pickerel looking fish
just curious

Thanks

HI Napa
The pickerels spots run into each other like a chain link fence. They are sometimes called chain pickerel. A pike has oval spots that distinctly do not run into each other. The jaw line of a pike also goes back more towards their eyes than a pickerel. You will see the difference when you look at their markings tho.
Ice fishing for them can be awesome!

Exact explanation i was looking for. I did notice on Hawghunters picture of his Concord Pike, that it looked more "spotted", then the chain pickerel

Thanks Jwall!

If the thing looks like it might eat your foot or hand, chances are it's a pike Wink

HaHaHaHa......ill keep that one in mind!

Hey Napa!

Jwall's description of pike and pickerel were right on the money. I just wanted to toss in my two cents on this.

Another way to tell the difference is by looking at the gill cover. On pike, the lower portion does not have any scales while pickerel, the entire gill cover is covered w/ scales. Also, pickerel have the tell tale "tear drop" mark under their eye.

Just wanted to pass along these pointers in case the fish don't follow the color coding rules

Good Luck!

Pike also usually have spots on their fins, whereas pickerel usually do not.

besides the info already given, another positive I.D. comes from pores on the bottom of the lower jaw. They look alittle like tear ducts. They are absent in pickerel, pike have 5 or less, musky have more than 5.

whats the 411 on big suckers? are they available at baitstores or do you usually fish for them first and then use for bait? do they move slower than big shiners? Sounds like some great pike ammo. Also, great catches Bam!

Yup you can buy them, kind of expensive but not much diff in price than REAL golden shiners aka redfins, the big boys not what most places call pike. The place to go near the oxbow is Valley Sports in east hampton. Some guys find them during their run in streams and get them.NO their not any slower than say a carp lol.Very soft skinned and pike love them Wink another thing you'll find is, to use what I call real pike size bait you'll need Lakers to keep your flags down if icefishing, even with them I'll trim their tail fin
