Was in south hampton with my wife, she was doing a wedding photo shoot so i snuck off to chicopee road, found a small pond before reaching Chicopee lake. Just fishing with artificial worms and had a single float out with a crawler on it. All of the sudden there was a huge commotion in the water in front of me, couple birds flew away, and the ducks darted off. In front of me i saw the back of something, it was roughly six inches wide. It spun around my bait and then moved offshore, it looked like a submarine preparing to dive, i watched it swim near the surface for about ten yards before it disappeared beneath the surface, it gave off a large wake. I watched for ten minutes to make sure it wasn't a cormorant, definately not. still new to freshwater fishing, what could it have been? a pike or something? the pond was pretty small, i couldn't see the eco system supporting such a large aggressive predator, but there were reminents of large crappie and frogs in the water, so i guess it was possible, the fish must have been almost four and a half feet long. i've NEVER seen anything like it. so i was wondering if you guys have ever seen anything like this, and if so what it was and more importantly, how do i catch it. thanks. jordo

Yes there are muskies in mass. There are some threads somewhere in this site about it as well

It could be a carp... They aren't typically skinny, but it is early in the year.

Does the pond link to the CT river? If so, it could be a salmon, sturgeon, monster eel, or striper. It is the spring, and something could be spawning...

If it doesn't link to the river system, it could be part of the pike family. Also, ponds and rivers in that area hold Bowfins. See this:

Bowfins gulp air, eat small birds... They get big too...
