Thanks for the advice everyone, as always you folks are a helpful lot.

I guess I need to get myself a 7'MH rod and some 15lb fluorocarbon line, if I want to fish jigs right. BTW, they're Boag Hog Baits jigs, so they're good quality.

I wonder how that's going to go over with the wife. Wink

I do have some 12lb florocarbon. I may respool this setup with it until I can buy another.

Again I really appreciate all your advice.

Cheers,
Patrick

med heavy is not ideal. Heavy, fast or extra fast is best imo.

AGREE! I've lost a bunch of quality fish over the course of a couple months due to hooksets with a 7'0 MH! If your getting a dedicated jig rod i'd go with a 7'6 H. Awesome for jigs and you can throw a punching setup or even swimbaits.

Also depending on the quality of the flurocarbon(If you use it) i would go with 17lb-20lb. You can get away with 15lb, but be aware if you hook even a 3lb+ bass and gets wrapped around anything tough on the hookset your almost guaranteed
to break off. If your fishing just bare bottom with little cover/structure or around shallow cover like docks and light weeds you'll be okay. Just watch them dang fluro knots! Sometimes i can tie a knot i could go tuna fishing. Other times the same knot will break off like nothing!

I let the weight of the jig and the type of fishing dictate the rod choice and line choice when jig fishing.
Baitcast:
For jigs 1/16 oz to 1/4 oz, a 7' mh fast or a 7' 5" mh xfast. 12# copolymer line or 15# floro.
Jigs 1/4 oz - 1/2 oz. 15# floro 7' heavy fast.
Jigs 1oz-1 1/2 oz. 7'6" xtra heavy 1-3 oz flipping stick and braid 30-60#.

Spinning: 6'6" mh fast used for skipping up to 1/4 oz jigs on 12# copolymer.

just got back from BP. wish I read this before I got there. my question is does anyone trim back there jig brushes some seem pretty ridged

I used to years ago and all it did was enable the jig to get hung up all the time.

I don't bother now.

I will occasionally trim skirts.

Honestly i have no clue if it's for the better or worst, but i usually make sure the guard it BARLEY trimmed after the barb. Only time i dont trim and like a long guard is heavy cover.
