I shared this story in the last senko thread , I will reshare it now since it looks like different people are involved in the thread.

back when senkos 1st came out I belonged to a bass fishing club. WE had a group of 20 or so guys. Before the senko existed there were 5-6 guys who were consistently winning tournaments or finishing near the top, there were another 5-6 guys who would occasional win but always come in with a limit and then there was a group of about 8-10 guys who almost never did well. then one day the senko came out and the word spred fast at how easy it was to catch fish on one. Now all of a sudden those 8-10 guy were catching limits and winning tournaments.

So my questions are. Did these guys coincidentally become better fishermen at the same time senkos came out? Or was the senko making it possible for guys with less skill to do well because it did not take any more skill to use them?
Funny thing is that whenever senkos were "not an option" like in our march and april tournaments or when we went to places like Winnipeasaukee or Champlain where most fishing was done deep or in thick weeds those same guys reverted right back to the bottom 8-10 guys.

Gut hooked a couple fish, wanted to find out how to stop it n you all start ripping me. didn't realize there was such a thing as fishing snobs. Only started throwing senkos this summer, it's fun and I caught a lot of nice fish. Had several gut hooks on a windy day last weekend, never really had a problem before that. You guys need to chill out.

Like I said I've got 30-45 min only to fish when I get to go out, when I find a more effective bait or get bored with senkos I'll switch it up, but for now it's "throw senkos or die"!

i don't think people are knocking on you. if you're going out to just catch a few fish for fun then fire away.

but if people think there's just as much skill to tossing a senko and letting it sit than skipping a jig on a baitcaster through a 6" hole in a dock or pitching to a target several yards away without making a splash then they're nuts.

No ones bashing you man relax. But your wondering how to reduce the # of gut hooks and people follow up by asking on why the hate on the senko and people respond.

Dave no one is ripping you. You posted a question in a thread and we are discussing it both the pros and cons. Thats what you do on a message board. It's not personal.

when I fish a wacky worm I use a big hook.cast it out and let it sink.on a tight line.watching for hit on way down. then I slow retrieve stopping to let it sink on the way. I feel the hit right away and set the hook.i have very few gut hooked fish .

When I was a kid, I was watching a fishing show. There was this guy with a Southern drawl accent. he said over and over, " you gots to be a line watcher" That is the key when using senko type baits, be very aware of your line and you will have far less gut hooks.

Here are some comments I made in an earlier thread on Senkos on how I've dealt with this. Hope it helps.

Here's how I deal with it: 1) Use hi-vis yellow braid with leader to watch floating line closely, 2) Keep rod tip up to feel for subtle strikes, 3) Don't let Senko sit for more than a second or so before continuing retrieve, 4) When feel fish weight, set hook immediately, 5) Don't fish weightless Senko in heavy wind, 6) If all your best intentions fail, learn to do the turn the hook upside down hook removal. Can't remember the last time I had a fish die with a Senko.

its seem everyone has an opinion on senko fishing.dave you did the right thing asking about hook removel on this forum. thats what its for so we can help eachother to learn. in the shot time I,ve been a member I have learned a lot from the fisherman on this site.we are all learning a lot about senko fishing good and bad.

Don't worry about the fishin snobs dave. They treat every day like it is a tourney. Some of us are weekend hacks and don't have fancy boats or hrs to put in for fishing. Like you I grab n hr here n there. If the fish want senkos that is what I give them. I love cranks n ratl traps n other various lures too. Sometimes conditions from shore make these difficult to fish. Need to work on jig presentation haven't been patient enough.

I find it amusing that during a conversation about gut hooks and the number one bait that causes gut hooks the guys that prefer to use other baits like cranks and jigs are called snobs. I didn't see anyone calling the senko supporters any names. Weird huh?

Here is a question. What would all you senko slingers do if Senkos did not exist? Answer the question as it is asked. I dont want to see " but they do exist". I look forward to your replys.

Culprit rubber worms

True story.........Last weekend Denny and I fish our honey hole, we threw : spinner baits, JIGS, cranks and Texas rigs all morning until 11:30. NOT one fish, neither of us picked up our worm rods. At 11:30 in the heat of the day I picked mine up, I caught a 2.9 off a dock, a dink in the pads. Then we went to a drop from 6-13 feet and I caught a 4.13 all wack'd worm. NOT ONE was gut hooked and they all swam away. What's the moral of the story?
