a 6' bed with the tailgate down = about 7'. 12' boat leaves a good 5' hanging off. I'd have to check the law but i think anything over 4' requires a nice orange flag. no big deal. i also thought about a truck bed extender as well to be extra safe. so i'd be more like this guy

My partner has a Tacoma and we put our 12' Jon in. Haven't had any problems. We put a flag on, can't hurt. We just strap the bow into the tie downs
I have a Tacoma and I haul around my Pirouge 11' 1" with no problem.
The Tacoma has strap D Rings on each side of the bed near the tail gate split...I simply use 2 straps to tie down to handle mounted on nose of the Pirouge (Kayack) and I bought a $2.00 light stick (battery operated) ah Home Depot that is secured on the nose handle that flashes red so it can be seen in darkness.
Tacoma is an awesome Truck!
