Nutrient enrichment has resulted in excessive plant growth in the lake. As the plants die, sedimentation increases, making the pond more shallow. Nutrient enrichment, other sources of sedimentation such as runoff from the roads, and poor circulation are accelerating the aging process of the pond. Without intervention, Ames Pond will continue to degrade and will eventually become a swamp. Shallow pond with a weedy bottom...with heavy action only when using live bait.
Kayakers will like this place. Park and launch along West Street which bifurcates the north and south ponds. Lots of weeds provide ample opportunity for topwater fishing. Pickerel predominate but there are lunker bass in here too. There is also good shore access from West Street and Highland / Canton Street.
