North Pond (florida) Description

This small, 18-acre trout pond is located within the Savoy State Forest. Maximum depth is 28 feet average depth is 13 feet. The water is clear and of excellent quality, with a transparency of 14 feet. The bottom is composed primarily of muck, although there are some scattered gravel deposits. Aquatic vegetation is scant. Shoreline development is extremely light, being limited to a public beach. The pond is part of a camping and picnic complex run by the Department of Environmental Management. To get to North Pond, take Strykers Road south from Route 2 for about 2.9 miles, then take a right on Shaft Road and follow it south until you see the boat ramp and parking areas on the right. There is a prohibition on the use of outboard motors here, but the pond is small enough to be covered easily by paddle. The shoreline is very open and accessible, affording excellent shore fishing. The only other use of the pond involves swimming, which is limited to a small area of the east shore. Fish Populations: brook trout, brown trout, golden shiner and brown bullhead. The pond is stocked every spring with brook trout, sometimes with browns and rainbows as well.

This pond is noteworthy for the occasional trophy brown trout taken here. These are smart, old fish, which are very difficult to trick, but it can be done. Skilled flyfishermen generally have the best luck. The catchable trout stocked each year provide some fast, early spring fishing in this remote, wild setting. Try for them with small spinners or doughbaits fished near the bottom.
