Norris Reservation protects approximately 1200 feet of Second Herring Brook between Mill Pond (1.6 acres) and Gordon Pond (4.5 acres). Both water bodies were formed by dams that impounded the flow of Second Herring Brook. Mill Pond is likely deeper than Gordon Pond based on the absence of emergent or floating-leaved aquatic vegetation across much of its surface. Aquatic plants are more common in the shallow waters of Gordon Pond. Gravelly or rocky substrates, scoured by high stream flows during spring and storm events, characterize the channel of Second Herring Brook. The lower reach of the brook (offsite) is tidally influenced to a point just below the Gordon Pond dam. A small, perennial (or intermittent) tributary stream merges with Second Herring Brook just downstream of Mill Pond. This tributary drains a small pond located between the northwest property boundary and Dover Street.
