Lunker Lady Land

My buddy Dunt and I headed out West to Lunker Lady Land yesterday. The weather report was perfect for site fishing. We got up wicked early, packed up and made the long drive. We packed up the boat as fast as we could and got moving because the spot we wanted to fish was about a 45 minute drive in the boat. The very first thing I noticed was how low the water was. Probably the lowest I've seen in 15 years (don't quote me on that) . The morning air was chilly so I had on my gortex. This would prove to be the best move of the day putting it on. The wind started of as just a breeze but about 15 minutes into our ride it really kicked up. The waves started rolling with whitecaps. By the time we got to the spot the winds were at gale force and our plans were scrapped. Crankbaits were gonna be the thing. I'm not complaining because I love cranking. we were at the front of an island where the waves were crashing the shoreline. Well Dunt makes a cast before I even get the trolling motor in the water and fish on. I net it and we've got our first fish of the day. I positioned the boat so the wind would push us down the shoreline. When we got to the back of the island we decided to hang out back there and hope for the wind to stop. We had some choice names for Mother Nature. I had checked the forecast right before I left and there was no mention of a hurricane.
While we were behind the island Dunt picks up his second smallie on the crankbait that's about 2 1/2 pounds. We stay back there for about an hour with no more fish. There's another island not far away so we move to it and try the same thing. Start at the front and let the wind push us. The boat's in 26 feet of water and we're casting towards the shore. I put on a deep diving crank that will go to 2o ft. Whammy! I get my first hit of the day. I get it to the boat, Dunt nets it and it comes in at just under 3 pounds. We get to the back of the island and get nothing. We fish one more island with no fish and decide we are going to make a big move. We fight the waves for about a half an hour and find a nice long fairly protected stretch of shoreline. Dunt makes a cast towards a bunch of big rocks and gets hit. The fish starts ripping drag and he's pumped. I see the flash and think it's a Large mouth but as it gets closer I notice it's a big Pickerel. Dunt is a little bummed. He thought he had a beast smallie. BUt we both agree it's still an awesome fish. I see a bed and make a cast. Bam! She's about 3 pounds. Another bed another fish. Dunt picks one up off a bed. I also pick up a fish cranking near some rocks. These are the last fish of the day.
I missed a fish on the buzzbait and then another on the Dog. Dunt missed one on the crank. We decide it's time to bounce. We were on the water for 12 hours in some seriously s***ty wind and still managed some fish. We are pretty impressed with ourselves. I'm going back tomorrow with Darren and hope the wind leaves us alone.

PART TWO
Darren and I hit the Quabbin Sunday with a questionable forecast. There was a mix of sun and clouds with some off and on wind that ended with rain. We managed to boat about 20 smallies ranging from a pound to just under 4 pounds. I'm still on the hunt for a beast but I'll catch 2 pound smallies all day and leave with a smile on my face. Catching them on deep (20ft) diving cranks is proving to be one of the most satisfying things for me. I can't wait to get back up there. It's a long day but always worth it.
