Bassterrorist: i think you asked about water temps in a previous post. Horn Pond was 57 degrees today. Only found one really shallow spot where it went to 58.

I haven't seen any fish in the shallows, nothing. No lunkers, dinks, panfish or baitfish. Everything has been 7-10 feet or deeper off a point. I keep waiting for the "Fall Season - shallow into the backs of creeks" and I haven't seen it.

I was at horn pond this morning & saw some really small bass from shore. Doug you where catchin them in 15-20' a few weeks ago.
Your last trip it was 7-10' maybe their starting to move up shallower?

hit cochituate today. nothing in the shallows. in fact no bass at all today. water temp was 58. ended the day with 2 rainbows, but no bass.

I actually just picked up a fishfinder/depth finder this past weekend. Before when I said the 15-20 I was probably more like 7-12. This past week I was pretty much in the same spots.

One that is interesting is that the weeds are definately dying off. A months a ago I was pulling weeds almost every cast, and now a lot thinner, or non-existent. It was a lot more consistent of a bite when the weeds were thicker and the water a little warmer.

What i really need is a few hours when I'm not crunched for time and scout out a few news spots; around the island, your hump, down by the spilllway?

caught one just under 5 lbs a few weeks ago at the spillway. Good place to hit after heavy rain.

Hutch,

I think your spot on, I also haven't seen that sort of baitfish migration into the coves (the ones I hit from shore, anyway). I do see, however, that the weeds are browning out (sucking oxygen out the water with them). With temps like that, the fish should be active. Hit a few spots this weekend and S-L-O-W! Sometimes, shallow is also relative term and the fish (let's use Horn Pond) are choosing 7ft as opposed to 15-20ft as their "skinny" water. Or, it could be that they are still staging/transitioning into the shallows--I'll keep going as long as my hands can stand it (Mornings are RAW now...LOL).

That's what Im talking about--great report (snippet LOL). This will help narrow down water as the season closes. Also, NICE rainbows! Stuff those with fresh Oregano and Thyme (salt and pepper crust) and wash it down with either a Stella Artois, Octoberfest, or Corona--when the budget demands it..LOL!

Greek,

Were they "grown up" fingerlings, or bass in the 1.5lb range up? I hope to try and fish Horn into late November : )

They where fingerlings maybe 4-6". Last year my last fishin trip was Nov. 21st @ horn pond. I would like to get my boat out 1 more time before winter gets here.

I think the fall frenzy might be starting in my area. Ive been doing great this past week. All bass were in the 2-3.5 range, with one that was 4.7 lbs. All of them were caught on a hack attack jig. What's interesting is that 3 were caught when I was swimming the jig back to shore to make another cast. I have read that a swimjig is great when the fall frenzy starts so maybe this is a good sign. Also dont pass up going fishing just because the wind is raging. Some of my best days this week were when the wind was crazy. Ive just thrown a heavier jig (half ounce or up) and i could feel the jig just fine. Some of the better spots ive hit are were small brooks that empty into the lake. They bring in water that is a little warmer than the lake and the bass seem to congregate there and are much more active. And yes I have to agree with Bam......JIGS!!!!!!!!!

BM:

Nice "jig work"! Where were you and were you fishing from a boat? I hit the charles again (tried a a tube; worked super slow almost deadsticking) and only got "harassed" by panfish Smile They say smallies charge up from 45-50 degrees (water temp). I haven't seen it yet, but then again I dont think water is that cold yet either.

I tried targeting some smallies today on the Merrimack but no luck. I didn't know that about the temp range you mentioned, I don't the Merrimack is that cold yet either. good luck fishing the rest of the fall! and you are right mornings are getting raw!
