Can anyone give me any advice on a good rig or the most reliable rig to use for lakers/browns at wachusett. Ive heard people say bottom rigs with live shiners and ive heard others say powerbait doubled up with a long leader and egg sinker. Whats your opinions on the best rig or rigs for wachusett? Thanks

You should really talk to Muskiebigfish on this one. He is the Wachusett Guru.

I never really hit Wachusett before this past year and after going with him a few times, I ended the Wachusett season with a handful of 4lb+ smallies and 3lb+ Lakers.

Usually large to xtra-large shiners off the bottom with 1oz weight.

X2 1oz two foot leader and your good to go. I always use shiners and aim for anything except for rainbows and that set up works for all

Instead of a shiner try fishing with a yellow perch fry. Perch makes up most of the forage for lake trout at the 'Chu. They are killer if you can catch small perch.

My biggest laker out of the 'Chu is the one on my avatar caught on yellow perch fry. It came out at 7lbs 5oz and 26" with some serious girth. Fish lived to fight another day.

A 9lber or a Loon!

Loons, ahh yes. They will take your best peice of Bait everytime, I have 8 Loons and not looking for anymore!!!! It's the opposite of shooting fish with a crossbow, I'm catching Birds with my Fishing Rod!! hahahahaha

what do you do when you hook into a loon? Cut the line or reel it in and try to remove hook?

Posted Wed Apr 03, 2013 2:58 pm

I hit the rod as hard as I can. The hook will come out, I have also had to light my 60lb Power Pro to cut it. I havent't got one all the way to shore but what a fight, they swim under water and rip off 50 - 60 yards fast as a King Salmon!! Comerans do the same thing, the only good thing about the Loons is that the Bait fish are around..

Is spring the best time for the lakers at the CHU? My buddy and I are planning on fishing gates 7-10 throughout the day next Saturday, but my buddy seems skeptical that we will run into any lakers Rolling Eyes I haven't fished the CHU in over 10 years. The last time i can remember was when i was about 14 years old and i landed a nice 4 pd smallmouth. I guess my question is what kind of water features should i be looking for when fishing for lakers ( deep pools, rocky shallow water, drop offs)? Im used to targeting small rainbows so this will be a learning experience for me. Thanks again guys for all the info so far, you guys are much more helpful then some of the people on ice shanty Laughing

This time of year they can be everywhere. You just gotta hope they swim by.

They will go where the bait fish go.Find them and or perch and the lakers shouldn't be far behind but he is right they could be deep or shallow but one thing is for sure they will be hungry!
