So im heading out for the first time this year and was wondering if the jerk bait would be my best bet at landing a bass

It would really be a great bait to start with. You could also thy for a reaction strike with a rattle trap, or spinner bait. Try to find the warmest section of water uaually the north west shoreline, on an area with large rocks, or boulders in it, that usually holds the heat from the sun. Sometimes two degrees makes all the difference in the world. It's kind of early, but try the deeper water nearest to a spawning area, especially with the jerk bait. If you havn't got one yet, get a bait that suspends, or falls very slowly, throw it out and KILL it for 30 seconds or more, then give it a few twiches and kill it again. If you bait floats up you can add a little more weight by putting larger size hooks on it. Most suspending baits come with a no 6 hook, you can swap them out to a no 4, and just by adding a couple of split rings you can get it to suspend.
