Ok guys need some expert advice here. I went out today and noticed that my finder wasn't working properly. It powers up, but I couldn't get a read out. I thought maybe the unit was shot or it was major interference but all the system checks are ok and the demo mode worked fine. Seems like a transducer cable issue but that seemed ok too and it's brand new.

I got home, used a different power cable and different transducer, and put it in the tub...this time, the depth reading and display worked, I could get a reading to scroll on the screen, but the temperature reading wouldn't light up. I could hear the fast pinging (like a clicking noise) in the water so hopefully that's normal.

Any ideas? I would just buy another transducer but the problem wasn't 100% fixed when swapping that out.

Did you have it on before you put the transducer in the water? I read that it will sometimes have trouble picking up the bottom if the unit was on while it was out of the water

Sam the ping you hear is from the bottom of the tub.....too shallow. You should also hear the transducer tick.....normal. My first check would be on the connector plug. Get a can of spray contact cleaner, and give them a shot. If you have to ..line magic spray will work also

thanks guys. upon further inspection, i noticed a very small bump on a section of the cable...since i have 2 i said F it, and stripped the wire. what do you know....it basically had a small cut and some of the strands were sheared on both the red and black small wires. crap. i guess i need a new transducer. the other one works but is so beat up that the temperature gauge doesn't work but everything else does at least. it should hold me over.

Sam, I had a few of my transducer wires get nicked up. I put some of that plastic automotive wire protector stuff on the wire that goes below the water line.

Its that wire cover stuff that has a split all the way down its length. I then used a few tiny tie wraps and it works like a charm to protect the transducer wire. Peace of mind if nothing else.

Find the smallest size possible....

Good idea Kman. I'm gonna do that too

great tip on the wire loom. i have to take a trip to radio shack already so hopefully they have it.

well...i'm still getting the same problem with a new transducer so i have no clue what's up. any way to give a finder a hard reset??

That sucks. Does that mean you fished today?

haha no it means i connected the power cable (with my inline fuse job which worked) and new transducer to the finder and turned it on. testing was done in the tub. the depth and screen readout seem to work but no temperature.

i also don't get a warning that no transducer is connected if i unplug it.

try the toilet

i'm about to. it's weird. it's like it doesn't even detect temperature as a read out ever since it started bugging out. but its still there when doing the preview mode. i'm going to look to see if there's a way to truly reset the unit or find specific steps to take that might do the trick like turn the power on, then plug in the transducer etc.

who knows. worst case is no water temperature reading. whatever.

It is weird. Have you googled it?

you sure the new transducer has a temp sensor?

I trust that you purchased the same model transducer, so you can eliminate the transducer as the problem, especially since that is the third transducer you have tested with. If the unit is booting up normally it is probably not a software issue. Does this unit have a backup battery of some kind? If so, pull that battery and then reboot the unit. Otherwise it is time to call Humminbird.
