So I'm thinking about getting a lightweight 12' tracker topper but wanted to throw this out there for discussion. I currently have a Honda Accord sedan that's about 16' long. Would it be safe and/or realistic to put a 12' jon on top of my car? I'm not sure if the length would pose a problem in terms of stability or the wind resistance driving would create. I already spoke with a few people about this and some say it might be dangerous, others say it wouldn't be too big of a problem.

What do you think? I did see 1 picture of a comparable setup and it didn't look too bad.

I think you' be ok Sam. It's still shorter than the car, which probably doesn't matter either way, but makes you feel a little more at ease. It does not weigh a whole lot (is this the one you're talking about customizing?) and I'm sure you drive at or around the preferred and safe speed limit anyway Wink . If you take it safe and slow, not like a jet rocket, I can't see any issues. Just my opinion bro!

I think weight is more of a factor.

Sam ....Put a hole in the bottom of the boat so the wind blows thru....Merry Christmas

thanks guys. yeah, it won't weigh that much in the end i don't think. the topper i have now is pretty damn heavy...and yeah, the one i'd be customizing.

Are those toppers lighter than a crawdad?

I think my 12' is like just short of 100lbs

You be OK, if you invest in a nice roof rack system.
Might be kinda tuff getting boat up & down by yourself, unless your built like HERCULES! lol!

Here's a thought. How's the accord holding up? Maybe, its time for a new pick-up truck & a new boat!! It will be a lot easier getting a jon boat in the bed of a truck.

I know a lot of guys who have a small pickup and throw a crawdad in the back. Really the best setup if you are fishing small bodies of water IMO.

If that is your car in the photo, you can have a T bracket made that will slide into the trailer hitch reciever, and be pinned so it doesn,t move, and only need one rack across your roof to hold up the boat. When you put it on the vehicle you can stand it up on it,s transom, and slide it across the racks.

I think it depends on the weight of the 12'' jon. Some are thin wall alloy, few ribs, and narrow beam while others like one I recently sold can be very heavy duty and wide beamed so I think it depends on the boat.

these boats are much lighter than a crawdad. a 12' is only 87 lbs.

bob, that's not my car but it should be close. i have a honda accord and a system for getting a boat on my roof. basically a sheet on the back of it to "protect" the car lol.

evan, i'm thinking about it for sure.

again, thanks for all of the input.

Sam,

One thing to consider is the max load for the roof rack. I have had Yakimas in the past and loved them. But, they are only rated to 150 lbs. I am not sure how much weight you will be adding when you do the mod. I think the T crossbar would be helpful. I plan to pick one up in the spring at Cabelas for $99.

Good luck with everything.
