Started looking around recently for a shallow water anchor and realized that I was not willing to pay the $ for a Talon or Power Poles. I figured why not go with a manual system since one of the biggest times I would use them is in tourneys or when there are at least two people in the boat and thus using them would not be that much more extra work.
After checking a few sites, I realized that I was still going to have to pay over $50 per pole (and this was for aluminum). I then started looking at the DIY route and saw some people using pvc piping. This however leads to muck that gets caught up in the pipe (which I guess you could plug to stop that). I then came upon a site in which the guy used 8' fiberglass rod and attached a pvc t handle on top. Seemed like the best idea so the search was on for fiberglass rod. Apparently, to find the kind that wont splinter or suck up water was not that easy. Fortunately, one site listed a distubutor for which the shipping cost was a flat rate (but not cheap). So I ended up buying 10 of them.
So long story short, if anyone wants an 8' fiberglass rod anchor, I will sell them at cost $20 (which includes the $15 fiberglass rod, $0.50 pvc handle, epoxy, and the rest is the shipping cost divided out over the 10 that I bought). Just let me know and we can meet up at one of the tourneys. If no one is interested, I guess I have 8 extra javelin poles (they work pretty well in this capacity too as I learned last weekend).
I'm still working on a system to store them/attach them to the boat which will probably end up in making something out of pvc pipe that attached over the rail. In the mean time, I plan on using a bungee cord to attach them to a forward and aft cleat. If you want to see what I made, check out:
