Braided Line

Hey all i was browsing line on Cabelas web site and ran into a bump.

I have never used or bought Braided line before, a lot of you have told me to get braided when fishing frogs in the pads. I'm curious of the lb i should use.

I'm going to be using a 7' Heavy pole/Spinning reel combo. Any suggestions?

Has a chart for Braid to mono strength

30-40lbs should be fine as the diameter stays very small. I've been reading great things about Power Pro braid...I'm gonna gave that a shot next time I need to respool. I've been use Berkley Fireline original gray and its been great. I just recently spooled with the crystal fireline and even though everything says its supposed to be the same thing as the original, there's just something different about it that i don't like. It just doesn't handle the same way, doesn't cast the same way and tends to loop off my spinning reel more often. I always use monofilament backing with braids to save line and a fluorocarbon leader. I feel like the fluoro leader this summer has netted me much more fish then ever before...or maybe i've just been hitting the ponds and lakes more aggressively this summer, who knows, could be that little bit of extra confidence it instills in you.

edit: if your flipping into heavy pads with a jig or using a frog, don't bother with the leader as it gives you an extra knot, which becomes a weak point. Bass don't really get a great look at the frog as it skitters across the top, so they won't really see your line with the all pads in the way.

Braid is good! But be careful you could overpower your rod and snap that before your line. I use 20 lb braid for spinning real and 40 for bait-casting rods meant to handle that job. But i don't flip (deep) into pads with spinning gear.

ok so i get this clear....To mono to reel, tie braid to mono, and lure to braid in lillies!

I think you mean:
1. Put a cheap mono backer on empty spool. Then tie on braid and fill spool to desired amount. This eliminates slippage on spool.
2. now if you in dirty water/weeds you can tie lure directly to braid,eliminating the worry of 2nd knot.
3. If you are in clear water and want a Flouro leader that works too.Tie on 3-5ft piece of leader material to braid then tie lure to leader tip.
Honestly i see and hear about people just fishin with braid and no leader. They still seem to catch fish.

I fish my braid without a leader. The only time I feel like I'm not catching fish is in clear water. I'll always have a rod with mono for the clear water. I have a Berkley lightning shock 7' spinning rod designed for use with superlines spooled with 20# power pro and I've had no problems in thick lilly's. I put a piece of hockey tape on the spool to prevent slippage.

The only time I use a flourocarbon leader is in super clear water or around really spooky fish, I tie a double surgeons knot to connect the two, when tied properly the knot is small enough and slides through the guides with ease.

reel companies are now starting to put O rings on spools so you dont have to tie mono or use tape etc

I use 18lb power pro on my spinning gear and 50 lb powerpro on my baitcaster. absolutely LOVE the stuff. it's pliability makes it much less resistant to tangles and more importantly backlashing.

it does float....the only time i have a real problem with that is with suspending jerks; it will elevate and float a suspender pretty quickly, especially the 50lb.

i use both in moss green color and haven't noticed any issue with fish seeing it; when i'm not getting bit, my friends using floruo aren't either.
