It's gonna warm up quite a bit today and tomorrow. Im planning on making some casts from shore to the open water spots. Any suggestions on what to throw? Thanks in advance.

I usually start with a search bait; either a jerkbait; shallow crankbait; or lipless around 1/4oz in the early spring (shiner/yellow perch/bluegill pattern). If nothing bites, I then try my personal favorite: a nail weighted 4" senko fished s-l-o-w (lift followed by slow fall and pause) on 8lb test.

Actually, I wet my pole (LOL) today for the first time! I didn't catch anything but it sure felt good to get off a few casts!

p.s. none of the above worked today! LOL! But that's why I love fishing--what worked today does not tomorrow and vice versa!

Good Luck!

Hey Buddy- I'm thinking the same thing in the next few days. Hoping the warm weather will give us some open water to angle! I plan on starting with jigs, tubes, weighted lizards and jerk baits. The fish will still be relatively slow due to the cold water but if we present the bait in an enticing way they'll strike it. Fishing is all about putting something in the water for them to hit- case in point.....one of my old roomates hit the water with me on Maspy on March 26th in 2009, it was his first time ever jitterbugging and my first trip in 09 on open water. We went around 9pm and I wasn't expecting much action but on his first cast he landed what I refer to as "the legend"! We didn't have a scale or camera but I'm guessing it was in the 6-7 pound range based on memory and the photo on my cell phone...a monster. I've also heard stories about big bass smashing poppers a few feet from existing ice on the water. See what is getting the attention of the fish and keep on throwing it out there. Good luck!

Small jerkbait was the key for me tonight with a St Patty's Day Bass

My first bass usually comes on a jig, blue, black or purple.

I usually start the year with small crankbaits and finesse jigs. Fish #1 this year came off of a Bomber 4A in about 4' of water, fish #2 however came off of a 1/4oz Johnson Beetle Spin. The "Beetle" is one of my favorite cold water lures, small, still got some flash and can be fished in a huge variety of ways. Helicopter it, rip it in like a spinnerbait, or jig it along the bottom, there really is no way to fish it wrong!! Good luck!!

when i first get to go out it will be the first tourney, i will light up a joint and get my head right and throw a white single colorado 1/4 oz spinnerbait. and i don't care what i catch, j/k
about the caring part!

i will also work an electric blue football jig with a white split tail trailer for a long slow time.

I got out 3 times last week. I'll share what worked for me and what didn't...

Thursday I hit a little lake in Malden; I threw lots... lipless cranks, swimbaits, spinnerbait, dark 3.5 inch Coffee Tube, a Senko, and threw some jigs around a discarded X-mas tree. I fished the perimeter of the lake over the course of a few hours. No fish, no bites.

Friday, same lake in Malden. I took a little different approach, I fished a narrow, steep part of the lake specifically, and within an hour got my first bass of the year. I threw a lot less than the previous day too, I almost exclusively threw a 4 inch pearl white BPS tube and thats what I got my fish on. It was no lunker but it felt great having a tight line and reeling in my first fish of the year! Not only was it my first fish of the year but it was also my first fish I've ever caught on a tube and the first fish I've caught on a baitcaster.

Sunday I hit the Concord for a few hours going for Largemouth and/or Northern Pike. There was a bunch of us there and no one caught anything either. I tried a bunch of stuff too, plastic worms, lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, tubes, and a few other things. No fish, no bites but was great to get out on the river.

My fish from Friday in Malden:

Thursday I hit a little lake in Malden

I live about 5 minutes from that little lake and drive by it at least twice a day, to and from work. If you fish the opposite side (which I'm sure you did at some point) from where you took that pic, it's a little deeper. If you fish just to the right or left, it usually provides some action. There's not much size to anything in that water and it is fished heavily once the weather starts to warm up. It's a good place to take kids. They have a few "Kiddie" tournaments there during the summer.

Been so friggen busy lately, that I can't get any time to get out! Pretty soon though I gotta MAKE the time!

Haha yup spent some time on that side too, mostly the first day. It seemed like there was some numbers situated where I was because the only other catch that I saw that day came from the exact spot I I got mine.

As for there not being that much size to anything in that water, I have seen some decent stuff come out of there. My biggest largemouth ever came out of that pond, a 5 lber (weighed and caught using a white bitsy bug jug, yum money craw trailer). Granted, i have only been avidly angling since last May, before that I was just an occasional fisherman, so I hope to shatter that personal record this year. ALso, Moments after my lunker, literally less than 5 minutes, my brother caught a 4 lber a few feet down from me. That day really sold me on that lake/pond. Smile

Really? I have never seen ANYTHING even over 2 lbs at best pulled out of there! Good to know and good for you bro!
