1st of all, I hope you all have a wonderful and safe Holiday.

2nd, I think its time to get some Ice Fishing Tourney rules started, while people are still checking the site and interested.

I would post this under the "Ice Fishing" section, but didn't want this thread to go unnoticed.

Also, a reminder that the New Year is in 3 weeks, so we all need to get New Fishing Licenses. Certainly on the Ice, Range Dick has easier access to come out and pay us a visit to check your fishing license.

Just for everyone's info, 1 license allows you to have 5 ice fishing traps out.

Things we need to determine.

1. Team Size.
Stick to the standard 2?.......or make it teams of 4 or 5.....or just make it like Lake Boone, 10 on 10...Obviously this can be determined based on the amount of people who enter a tourney as well. 2 people is tough maintenance thats for sure

2. How many traps allowed out per team
5 traps for every 2 people?

3. Are we using the standard rules. Bass only, 12inch minimum, best 5.
or should we extend it to Bass and Pickerel and Cats, since in my experience, most days consists of tons of pickerel and very few bass...But Ive also had Bass festivals on the ice before, where I was vomiting from running so consistently to traps with Bass on them. Its our call on this one.

4. Start time and is set up allowed before we start?
I say we pick a time, say 8 or 9am, to meet on the Ice. Once everyone has paid, we just go. Set up time is on you. We cant wait for everyone to set up before we say you can fish.

5. Live bait allowed.
Id imagine Ice fishing tourneys are live bait tourneys.

6. Is there a time limit per spot?
No idea if there is, or isn't, just tossing out my thoughts

7. Any limitations on the Auger you bring. Power vs Hand Augers.
Doesnt matter to me

I have personally never participated in an Ice Fishing Tourney, so feel free to add to this list, or correct me on some things.

I will say this. Its OUR tourney, OUR group of Anglers, so its OUR rules to make. The less complicated, the more fun.

ps If you have never Ice Fished, and would like to..Update that Christmas list, and put some ice fishing gear on it! haha.

Johnny Bag A Bass....Man up brotha...get out there with us!

Thanks

Excellent post Napa

I look forward to ice fishing this season and if we can get some tournaments in that would be great!

I've been thinking about this for a little while, so I have a few thoughts...

I've also never been in an ice fishing 'tourney' so I'm not so sure how you would judge a winner. I have personally never really caught a limit of anything other than pickerel while ice fishing, and when I ice fish, I usually target different species (tip ups for bass, pickerel, pike or salmon and while those are going, I usually try to jig up panfish). I don't think you should limit it to just bass. Perhaps do different categories and biggest fish of each wins something.

Can't tell what the turnout would be, so I think you should just scrap the whole team thing and do everyman for themselves, 5 lines each (tip ups or jig poles)...

Live bait definitely...never heard of anyone putting a lure on a tip up!

I don't really know about time of day and ice fishing, as it seems people catch fish all day...I would suggest getting there closer to 7 or 730 to set up and a start time of 8 ???

I don't think there should be a time limit for each spot...try to choose a good spot in the beginning Smile then move if it;s not working.

No limit on auger or # of holes (as long as you're not making holes all over the lake!); I'm sure some people have power augers and no hand auger and vice versa

I was also thinking of scrapping the whole tournament idea, and just do a gathering, because it would be difficult to judge a winner. Could do a simple biggest fish of the day 5 bucks a guy or something or another option could be just throwing 5 bucks in a pot and getting a bunch of food/beer and just hang out! I have a Coleman stove I could bring, and then everyone could just mill around and 'visit' people during the day and then maybe have a meeting time for some food.

We should also get a list of spots going, we can start some ideas, probably put it in the Ice Fishing section, so people start looking on there, as there will probably be more posts coming up on there soon!

Just some thoughts...

PS...Napa, I'm liking the new profile pic!! Temps were pretty chilly this week; ice is definitely coming soon!

Good ideas, thanks for the input Ted.

I do want to keep it tourney style going on this thread, a few times at least. The winners would be declared simply based on total bag, just like we usually do.

And I may not be alone in not wanting to Ice fish alone, lol, so i think the team concept will stick. How many people per team is another story.

As far as species....its up to us on what we want to allow. Im fine with just Bass, or Bass and Pickerel....either way

Obviously Ted there will be many times we just go, to have fun and drink some beers, grill and we will certainly let you know about those days as well.

Keep the input coming!

I'd like to make it to a ice derby if you have one. Whateva the rules are i'm in.
Won't be long now!

I was just doing some research online and realized that people in Minnesota are crazy. They have tourney's with thousands of people, they fish for 2.5 hrs., and you can win a pick up!!

It seems that most tourney's have different divisions for different species and the biggest fish wins. Everyone weighs in fish as they go and then release them. I think this is a good idea because I have enough crap to bring ice fishing, and really don't want to deal with a cooler/live well setup on top of it all.

No offense, but I'm still not sold on the team thing...it's not like you won't be fishing with someone, you can all choose where you fish, so you can drill right next to whoever you want. Just my opinion...

how are u gonna keep ur fish alive?

Posted Fri Dec 10, 2010 11:59 pm

Napa I'll make it to a few of them, run with it bro set them up, pick the places make it happen. i'll help if you want but it sounds like you're ready to go!

merry x-mas to all as well

how are u gonna keep ur fish alive?

Exactly...I think that's why most of these things do biggest fish per category. Weigh it and release it right after its caught, maybe put it in a bucket for a few minutes until its weighed...Have to have a certain place to release that's not too close to everyone else...

Posted Sat Dec 11, 2010 8:23 am

I have heard of using 2 way radios to call in a fish to be weighed in?

Posted Sat Dec 11, 2010 10:45 am

sounds fun! just need to figure out the weigh in.i know u gotta release quickly in the cold dont need to stress the fish.

Posted Sat Dec 11, 2010 12:59 pm

I appreciate all the input, but i dont want this thread to get off track.

This is a post, regarding team ice fishing tourney's. I understand people's concern about the fish, but if you dont want to bring a cooler to keep the fish alive, then this isnt the venue for you.

We have done a dozen tourneys with a cooler and havent lost a fish, Heat or Cold, a cooler will do the trick if you have an air rator.

The radio idea is solid, i justs dont know who wants to be at the designated weigh in station, and who wants to walk all the way over to weigh in 1 fish, and walk all the way back to your post.

I dont mean come off as rude at all, i just want to keep the thread on those interested in doing a team ice fishing tourney, where the biggest bag wins. ( 5 fish max)

I wont feel slighted at all Ted if you want to start up a thread about an individual ice fishing tournament. Im sure there will be plenty who want in that as well. Its just most people i know have split gear with a friend or brother, so not everyone has enough gear to handle a solo tourney, ya know

Posted Sat Dec 11, 2010 1:30 pm

Don't mean to be rude but the rules and weigh in should be solid!!!just so u know your gonna have dead fish all over the place.plse do me a favor don't hold ur tourney at any good fishing spots.just sayin bro don't need a mass homicide, winter kill is enuff 20 bucks to fish 40 if u win and dead fish all over the place not so solid!!!

Posted Sat Dec 11, 2010 2:49 pm

Jimmy, ive seen you at a total of 0 tourney brotha....Yet you always seem to pick a battle on the boards...i dont know why but like i said, if you dont want in, dont come bro and leave it at that. its simple..im not hosting a tourney to listen to PETA people complain if a fish dies.

Like i said, we will figure out a way to make it work without killing any fish, just like we do every single time we fish.

If anyone is going to complain, please save it. If something on this thread bothers you, just close your screen. Its the Holidays, and this is a thread for those who are PRO ICE FISHING TOURNEY, not a thread to battle on whats right, whats wrong and how I should fish.
