Finding a lot of bait down here on the Cape but not always the bass. Went out Friday to a local pond and did very well. The water's temp. has dropped below 60 degrees finally & fishing will pick up, I'm sure. Picked up a few, none real big, on spinnerbaits on windswept shorelines & used a soft jerk minnow bait from PowerTeam Lures known as the Hammer Shad on a 1/16th oz. darter jig over weeds & weedlines. My biggest bass, not that big, came on a CC Redfin minnow on inside weedlines where bait was present (surface ripples). Anxious to get out again on the bigger bodies of water to see if the same baits work.
I went to a private pond in Northwood NH over the weekend. We only got on the pond for a little over an hour due to the other festivities. Water temps were down to the mid-fifties. I was able to land 3 bass ranging from 1lb to 3lbs all on an 8 foot running perch colored crankbait. The biggest bass at 3 pounds hit when I ran the crankbait by some rocks in 6 feet of water. The other five guys in the boat didn't get a nibble- they used a variety of jigs, worms and someone threw a swimbait- most of them were preoccupied enjoying their beverages.
This time of year I've always done well on crankbaits, bumping off the bottom or remaining weeds and structure as well as pausing spiratically during the retrieve.
Water temp is finally getting in the range where the bass know it is time to chow down The next couple of weeks the bite should be good and then it will slow down as the water temp drops.
