In all my years of fishing, I've yet to tangle with a smallmouth. I live on the south shore, and would travel a decent way to hook up with one of those, but, like everyone else, would prefer not to burn a tank. I fish from shore and have recently bought my first kayak. Any good bets on productive waters? Thanks in advance.

It's not South Shore but I generally have good luck in the Charles in Watertown. Rivers are generally your best bet anywhere that's rocky and has feeder creeks or falls works nicely. I've caught nice smallies in the Putnamville Res in Danvers and I hear the Quabbin is THE place to go. I'll be making my first trip out there later this year. We'll see if it lives up to the hype. Good luck!

I don't know how to insert picture in reply. Maybe I can post a new one for a few smallie caught from bank.

The best smallmouth fishing from shore is Wachusetts Reservior. Maybe the biggest smallmouth population in the state. In my opinion, it is better than the big Q. However, last year, I only limit out couple times. Give the fact fishing from shore, there is no number there. Your chance to catch a 20inch plus smallie is greater than any other water in the state. (It is just my poor opinion).

I love wachussett. I wish they'd open that up for boats.

...I believe the Wachusett Reservoir holds the state record for "Smallies"....'pretty sure a woman owns that distinction right now...my second trip of the year last year was to Wa Wa-chusett( I went a few times actually) I work 5 minutes from it...NAILED 'EM that day...ALL "Larry" though...no "Sally"...they'll probably NEVER open that res. up to boats though Shawn-O....
