The Lower Mystic is full of Herring right now so my favorite place, can catch LMB, SMB (they do have SMB) and stripers. Caught a striper Sunday evening.

Sounds like the annual Alewife run has started. I was out there this past weekend and saw a Commerant get one that was longer than its neck. Haven't seen any Stripers yet, but saw a few last year early in the morning tearing up the surface of the water looking for the herring. HOpefully I can get back out on Saturday and see if I can get my first LMB of the season after getting the season started with a SMB last weekend.

There is also some sort of trail across from the Meadowglen mall on rt 16 that has some shore access.

That's MacDonald Park. I've never seen anyone fishing the river there, it's usually pretty nasty water.

Wow great info! Where do you access Lower Mystic and where are the dams?

I'm using 30 lb test braided on a 6'6" light weight rod. If a striper gets on, even a schoolie, can my tackle handle it? Or should I cut the line so I don't break anything.

That set up is more than enough for most if you don't horse-it in. Its a great fight, and will test you, but I caught one about 18-21inches two years ago at the Mystics on my son's batman pole (Shakespeare rod/reel with probably 6-8lbs test line that took a live shiner). You better fight for your spot at the dam though, last night drove by and their were about 8-10 cars parked outside.

I was at spot pond this afternoon. Went over to the cove just around the bend from the Memorial rock, I believe it will have to be re-named Hersey's cove...lol. Got nothing but someone else's old line with my Square Bill Crank bait. That snagged me up pretty good, ended up breaking my line trying to pull it in. So if you're over there, you may see a Sexy Shad floating a mere 10-15Ft off shore. If you have a retriever you may get my CB and whatever is on the end of the line I got stuck on.... Surprised .

So a bit aggravated, I went around the corner back towards memorial rock and casted my way down to the ledge where you can reach the big rock that sticks up out of the water. Flung a 5" senko, hit the rock and it fell right next to it. It was immediately inhaled and I set the hook. Good sized fish. fought her all the way back to shore where I was standing. My biggest fish ever!! At least 6.5 to 7 lbs. Switch my rod to my left hand, bend down to pick her up, and my FRIGGIN LINE SNAPS. I reached down and grabbed her by the tail, but as soon as she realized she wasn't attached to my line any more she started flappin and was just too slippery to hang on to. NOOOOOO!!!

LOL, spent another hour trying and trying, but once again I walked out of spot pond a defeated man!!! DAMN YOU SPOT POND!! LOL It has become the Neuman to my Jerry. The Yankees to my RED SOX!!
