I feel this purely depends on what cover / structure you are fishing and how you are fishing it. I feel it also depends on water clarity. I say that because let say Im skipping a bait under a dock. Once the bait clears the dock I keep going a few feet. If I can see what is going on around my bait and feel there is no potential I will just bring it in. On the flip side if there are pockets of brushy cover and the water is murky I'll keep retrieving as normal just because I cant see what is going on around my bait. Granted a vast majority of my fish caught on soft plastics are usually early on in the retrieve, that strike could come at any time. Im sure we've all had that fish hit a bait right at the boat or on the shoreline. Unless I know for sure that there is no potential for a strike, I wont pull the bait in.
