I've been having some bad problems with knots lately. I've been casting lures right off the end of my line (different rods, different spools of line, 20lb braid and 10lb flouro). I use the regular Palomar knot to tie snap swivels into the line. Is this the problem? What knot do you use for braid/flouro?

It can be a number of reasons.

Braid does swell with palomar knot

Flouro I use a trilene knot (palomar digs into flouro when using light line, not so much heavier flouro.

Next how old is the line? the first 50 yards of you spool is what's used the most & gets worn out & can weaken.

Go to "In Fisherman" there's a show called "knot wars", that tests different kinds of knots for strength .

Good luck

with braid I used regular palomar for years and never had a problem. I now use double palomar, you could try that. trilene knot for mono.

if the braid your using is old it can dry out over time and become weak. Ive used a Palomar with braid and never had a problem , but I know for sure fluorocarbon line doesn't do well with a Palomar , especially 12 lb test and under . Use a trilene knot with the fluro , and if your drop shoting try those new spin shot hooks and u shouldn't have any problems.

The braid is about 2 years old, and could be seeing some wear issues. I spooled the flouro early this spring.

In my basement I hung some weight from the flouro and was shocked that it couldn't hold anywhere near the advertised strength (10lb test). It broke at 5lbs with stuff that was on my spool, and broke at 7.5lbs with stuff that was still in the box (never been on a reel). Each time the line broke about 1/4-1/2" up from the Palomar knot, as opposed to the knot itself breaking. Does that mean it is a line issue as opposed to the knot?

The braid did a little better, and held 15lbs of weight before breaking (20lb test braid) but it also broke in the same spot as the fluoro.

Thought?

Make sure your line isn't twisted and lubricate the knot when tighting it down , sound like your problem with the fluro that why it's breaking just above the knot . That two year old braid is also a problem especially if you have used it in salt water.

From the responses it sounds like I need to switch to the trilene knot for light fluoro, and I'll chock the braid failures up to being old line. Thanks for the help everyone.

Tight lines (without knot issues!)

I change my lines every year both braid an mono but I've use the uni knot for all my lines 50lb braid an 10lb mono. I just started using the Alberto Knot to attach 20lb flouro carobon leader to a 30lb braid line and it work great , my first time catch was a 3lb 44oz bass in thick weeds.

with thin leader material I always use , uni knot, for tying on flies and streamers, when flyfishing. Lately the uni knot is my only knot that I've been using for floro and or mono on my spinning rods ,all different size line. Like Dang said you have to wet the line when you cinch it down... With heavy line, like 20lb floro, that I use while trolling spoons/speedy shiners OR top water poppers,With the uni knot you can leave a loop at the end for the hook or the lure to swing around ...much better action with the thicker lines. You have to check them and retie frequently..

With properly tied improved clinch knots or Palomar knots, have NEVER had braid come untied.

Might want to try wetting the knot some before cinching it down, helps lock it up, and try to not cut the tag end so low maybe?
