Not buying it and never did! The bass simply don't get that big up here. Nothing even close has been "officially" reported" since. Balonas is supposedly dead, so we will never know the real story.

Just a year after the 15lber was caught, a 13 lber was caught in the same general geographical location. There is also a 12lber on the list from the 60's and mulitple 11lbers

Scales were way different back then

That and totally awesome fisherman like Stratos were not around yet to catch everything

I am Stratos , and I support the above^ message!

There are a handful of guys in this state that specifically target big bass, DSouth and DaveL just to name a couple. They throw big swimbaits all day looking for the one big bite. They have caught some big fish but nothing even close to 15lb! Could a 15 be out there? Possibly, if there are I bet you could count them on one hand Exclamation Laughing

Come on MAFFers...That fish is NOT 15 lbs....compare the photo that Rich dug up to countless 10-12 lbrs documented, photographed and certified in Bass Master magazine lunker club and she's at best an 11 lbr all day....
Sucks that our state record has hair on it....but it does

yes thats why its a record fish and rare. Guys fish for all species all the time and dont set records just cause they target big fish. Do guys targeting big bass in Georgia catch 22 lb bass?

that bass is 15 lbs all day. I have never ever heard its weight questioned, only the location of the catch. That looks 11 lbs to you? Come on now.

With the stuffed gut it could very well be 15 lbs.If she's loaded with eggs that adds a lot of extra weight.

Wallum.

Look at 9.4 with the gut. Probably not even close without it. The fish in the picture is a pig.

looks like he filled it with golf balls!

what I have heard is the fish came through the ice and it was taken out of a small pond in the Agawam mill chain and the spot does hold fish over 8 pounds!

Looks like the site is dead but Trophy Bass Only website use to have a nice read about Walter's fish. They concluded that his fish was a genetic freak, a really special fish that just got big. Remember it was caught in 1975 before F1 strains of largemouths, transporting between states, photoshopping, or shoving lead into fish all became popular.

And that fish is huge. Just made my profile my one and only 10(<====), and Walter's fish is so much bigger. I use to doubt the record myself, but there just seems to be some big fish caught in Mass. Whether it be the herring runs, trout stocking, or swamp gas I have no idea why?

I have to agree and say the fish looks to be 15 lbs! Arguing about it one way or another will not change anyone's life, so why bother to do it? Bottom line is we all have our own opinions and no matter what at the end of the day, that is a huge fish in 1975, 1985, 1995, 2005, whenever!

It's definitely the swamp gas. That explains Stratos's head
