If you don't want to deal with a bulky life jacket, check out these float suits by Arctic Armor. They just look like regular gear you would wear, but they float. If you watch the news article, the rep says it has enough floatation stuff in it to keep 3 people on top of the water.

A test hole for what? Ice thickness?

Yep...being 350lbs....Being my first trip I would chissel a hole every 20ft or so unless I found I had a good amount under me in my first hole
