Picked up the new Shimano today and spooled the braid off the old reel and onto the new one. So far it feels incredibly and the drag is nice. We'll see how it goes. Thanks to all for the advice.

So much more enjoyable when your not worrying about your reel not working properly. Shimano makes great reels . Good luck.

Tight lines...

Agree with all sounds like reel issue. That said the drag needs to be adjusted as mentioned for the no stretch factor.

I toss mostly fireline and lol when I started after a bud turned me on to it I took it off after the first trip out with it. Why, I was false setting on everything do the new sensitivity lol. I also had drag issues. Well the next season I had more time and patience and became a huge fan of the product.

Fireline is great stuff, but you need to be careful about your knots. It's a bit slippery so a few extra twists in your clinch knots are recommended. Casts like a dream though and has no memory.

If you think polomar knots are good, you should try palomar knots.

palomar are good for braid. very easy and you don't really have to worry about breaking off like you would with fluoro. palomar + fluoro + jig = bad news.

NEVER buy any okuma that dicks sells there trash.

There are exceptions! I bought an Okuma Stratus GT for around $30 7 or 8 years ago and no problems and it is still running strong! I am using it on my drop shot rod. Maybe with the newer ones the quality isn't there, but that's pretty much true with everything today. Laughing I also agree with keeping the drag set with braid the same as you would with flouro or mono. People tend to think you can lock it down just because you are using braid. If the drag is too tight you will rip the hook(s) right out of their mouth Exclamation

Power pro zero impact braid line is what you need. There are certain sections of the line designed to improve your knot strength.

Thanks for the tips but I haven't had any issues with knots.

Can't wait to try the new Shimano this weekend!

I was making a reference to Bloo when he said to add a couple of extra twists to the clinch knot. No need with a palomar (happy Rich?)

I need to start using that knot, it's easier to tie than a damn clinch knot. I just fall into the clinch out of habit, and I don't retie all that often. Time to retrain the brain.

I learned the hard way. Had the clinch slip on me three fish in a row. I'm like, ok I just lost about 18 bucks worth of lures. Don't do that again

With fluorocarbon I always use this knot. I don't know the name so I call it the Shaw Grigsby knot.

With braid I always use a palomar or a double palomar, if I'm feeling paranoid.

With braid I always use a fluorocarbon or monofilament leader. If only to give me a little shock absorption, so I don't yank the hook out of the fishes mouth, in excitement.

With monofilament I use a uni knot or a palomar.

These knots seem to hold well for these applications.
