so I'm headed to bass pro soon to stock up on some gear and I was wondering what you guys considered the best lures for fishing right after the ice melts. I've heard jerk baits and plugs but I was wondering if you guys had any other insights. Thanks

Rattle traps and chatter baits are my go to to get a reaction strike in cold water.

I've never used a chatterbait. Whats the technique like for fishing one. I fish a lot of ponds with heavy vegetation so that often affects my lure selection and presentation.

If you have alot of weeds than a chatter bait is the deal you its more versatile than a spinner bait and when its cold they hit it and when its super hot they will hit hit harder. I would suggest white and white\ chartreuse but if at bps they have green pumpkin and other natural colors they are great too. You can also get replacement shirts like sexy shad or your favorite color. The Zman baits 3\8 mostly is the best hands down the skirts slide down because of no hook keeper tho but is easily fixed by gluing your trailer on some people don't glue personal preference. Fish it like you would a spinnerbait slowroll it, burn it, jig it, or get crazy like I do and use it like a swim jig and trow on some robo ez sad or lake forke tackle live magic shad trailers or you normally hollow belly or fluke. But for cold water I will be throwing these first thing the pond melts with the normal zoom split tail tralors and going slow or a single tail grub and a slow hop like a jig I throw this bait on abu revo sx with a 6'9" MH powel rod with 12lb mono or 15lb Seaguar floro as you can tell this is One of my many favorite baits.

check out the Mann's waker. It's a shad bait that doesn't get any lower than 3" in the water and you can burn it like a buzzbait, twitch it or slow crank it and get the huge wake. Big fan of the Mann's lures.

I remember when this chatter bait first came out,at $8 a pop! and of course it caught me. It is the only thing I have ever caught with it, myself. I still have 2-3 of them you can have them if you want!
