Would like to try fishing for squid with kids this year.Never done it,and dont want to miss the short time squid are around .Any helpfull info would be appreciated.
Squid usually show up toward around the end of april and will steadily increase in numbers into the first couple weeks of may. check the fishing forecast at onthewater.com to see whether their in this can be a great resource. Any land based squid fishing should probably take place at night. in the darkness the squid will make their way into the shallows to feed on any baitfish or crustaceans they can get their tentacles on! Squid as well as the baitfish they feed on are attracted to light. their are light rigs specifically made for attracting squid but a method that often works is to make a string on glow sticks with a lead weight at the end and throw it out. cheap and simple. most squid fishing from a boat is also done at night but can it can also be good during the day. during the day squid move out to deeper water and can be found using electronics. when you bring the squid to the surface it panics...and when a squid panics it uses one of its means of defense that being shooting a stream of water and of course ink out. this stains just about everything. so keep a bucket of water and a deck brush ready!!! that being said the helen h out of hyannis mass. to catch squid you will need to use specialized squid jigs. they are made by many companies including yo-zuri and shimano.. the typical tandem squid jig rig is made by tying two dropper loops 15-18 inches apart and attaching a squid jig to either one. using two different jigs is recommended. at the bottom a weight from 1/2 ounce to 1 ounce should be attached or another weighted squid jig. to fish it it should be dropped to the bottom and slowly jigged to the surface. when using glow in the dark jigs you have to shine them with a flashlight every once and a while to keep them glowing. thats all i got. catch me a big plate of calamari!!!
