Down imaging is really good for showing structure, such as underwater trees, around which bass will congregate. However, down imaging is not very good at showing fish; they show up as very tiny blobs that are difficult to distinguish from the background. For bass fishing, down imaging, or side imaging, is probably sufficient. If you are fishing deeper water where fish may be suspended in the thermocline you are better off with a standard fish finder. Because I do frequent ocean excursions, I own a Humminbird 597 ci HD DI which includes both plus GPS. It is awesome but I would not consider it "inexpensive".
