Five days ago I wrote to the editor about that story and he sent me this reply on on July 15th.

Thanks for your note. Although the bass had already been gutted at the time the photo was taken, it's pretty clear you're correct and the angler probably overstated the weight by several pounds. Either that or she had a bad scale. The fish had been gutted before we saw it so there was no way to independently confirm the weight. It was meant to be a light story about a happy angler in the summertime but we should have been more skeptical about this "fish story." Thanks again for writing. I'm going to put my whole staff in the live well for a day or two and not let them out.
