  • York lake is a popular early season trout pond, in part because of its fishability and the natural beauty of the area. Few, if any, trout hold over, but early summer anglers may still find trout action in the deeper water off the dam. Anglers frequenting the pond in summer can have fun with the abundant population of small bass. Large bass are nonexistent.

York Lake Description

This shallow, 40 acre, two story trout pond has a maximum depth of 16 feet and an average depth of 6 feet. Transparency is poor, extending to only 4 feet. The bottom is composed primarily of muck, and aquatic vegetation is abundant to a depth of about 6 feet around the entire shore. The pond and its watershed fall completely within the Sandisfield State Forest, thus shoreline development is minor, being limited to a public beach and picnic area. York Lake can be reached by taking Route 183 south from New Marlborough for 3 miles to Hill Road. The lake is located about two tenths of a mile east of Route 183. The informal boat access, a gravel ramp, is on the east side of the dam and is suitable for cartop craft and light trailered boats. There is sufficient parking for over 20 vehicles. Shore fishing is possible around most of the lake. No outboards are allowed on the pond, but electric motors are permissible. Fish Populations: largemouth bass, brook trout, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead and golden shiner. The trout were the the result of the annual spring stocking.
