Winnekeag is stocked annually with 500 trout during the spring season. The 1980 survey indicated that some carryover is likely. Chain pickerel provide most of the warm water fishing here, as they are abundant and of good size.
Winnekeag is an average size (118-acre) two-story pond location in Ashburnham adjacent to Route 101. The water is clear with a transparency of 7 feet. The average depth is approximately 15 feet with a maximum depth of 34 feet. The shoreline is 75% developed with summer and year round homes, and camps. Aquatic weeds are dense in the northern part of the pond and scant elsewhere. Boat access is limited to car top boats or canoes, which can be launched through an opening in the guardrails along Route 101. Shore access is limited to areas adjacent to Route 101. Fish Present: The fish population was sampled during the summer survey of 1980. Ten species were collected including the following: largemouth bass, chain pickerel, brown trout, brook trout, yellow perch, bluegill, pumpkinseed, brown bullhead, yellow bullhead and golden shiners. The most abundant game fish are chain pickerel and the most abundant pan fish are yellow perch.
