Comment: Cappy617, I live in Waltham and I have fished both the lower basin in Watertown and the upper river in Waltham. I find the early morning and the evening bites are the best. The river is tough after 10 AM in the morning unless its overcast or rainy. I agree plastics are a bait but i also like tubes, senkos and have luck with topwater baits (in the evening).

Comment: Havey Beach in west Roxbury is a great boat ramp to put in and is usually a quiet part of the river with lots of nice bass.

Comment: Caught a 3lb carp on a rooster tail behind the home depot in Watertown on Friday. Across from the docks.

Small mouth were hopping out of the water around some downed logs. I think it was their mating season.

Comment: I live in watertown right next to the square and the fall. behind the mall is good and if you walk the river just look for good coverage and access to deeper water. the largemouth tend to hit any plastics mostly worms. and they do get big!!! but the dover and needham area is the best by far for big ones.

Comment: I've hit up the Charles twice near the Watertown dam with no luck. It's the easiest spot on the Charles for me to get to since I work right near there. Tried first around 9:30a-11:45a (all different lures.) A few nips from smaller fish but nothing else. Tried a week later during this last heat wave from 5:30a-7a. Again, no luck. I've seen them jumping across from where I was but they're out of reach and there wasn't an access point on the other side. Should I try somewhere else (Saw behind the Arsenal mall was mentioned) before I give up on the Charles? Also seeing live bait/shiners have been working. When I'm over there I'm usually coming from work and tend to use lures. Is there a bait shop in the Watertown area?

Comment: Anyone know if theres smallies in the Charles River Village stretch around mill st? I think this is a Wellesley stretch. After the falls the rapids look pretty nice...but doesn't mean there's fish there, i.e; hemlock gorge stretch.

Comment: Great fishing here! You just need to adjust to people and the time of day. Largemouth are in plenty. Stay away from the boat launches and look for high grass with overhanging bushes. I have caught LM from 2lbs to 7lbs. Plus Crappies, Pickerel, bluegill.

Comment: There is a cool spot in needham, enter the cutler park, then follow the path for quite a long time till you see a turn on the left. A lot of open space. So far my trophy in charles river is a 8 pound largemouth. I don't recommend eating the fish because of the water mercury poisoning, but the place is awersome.

Comment: Anyone have any luck fishing the Hemlock gorge section of the charles in newton? There is quite a bit of shore line access but i've been there twice now without even a bit. Tried crawfish, senkos, rattle traps, spinnerbaits...everything but the kitchen sink, lol.

Comment: The charles has great fishing in Waltham,Dedham,Newton and Watertown in my area. The coves in Waltham used to be one of the most productive fishing areas. Now shore fishing is limited too early in the season in the coves due to over infestation of water chectnuts, lillys and other weeds. Its a shame efforts are not made to clean it up!Still there are some spots from shore but if you can get a canoe or small boat out there you will catch the big boys. As long as you can navigate the weeds with your drag you'll be alright.

Comment: This river is great from one end to the other. If you don't catch a 5 pounder here it must be because you caught a 6!!!
