Upper Mystic Cranking And Punching

Darren and I hit Upper Mystic for a few hours. There was a steady 15 MPH wind with up to 22 MPH gusts. We started on the right side leaving from the ramp with Darren throwing a KVD 2.5 and me ripping a 3/4 ounce lipless crank (brand unknown) through the grass. I get the first fish of the day that came in around 3 pounds. I couldn't find my camera (put it in a different place than usual) so he didn't make the highlights. When we got to the first big patch of pads we switched to the flipping sticks and I hook up immediately with a 3 pounder that throws the hook. A few minutes later I hook up again and boat my second fish. Then D gets on the board with a 1 1/2 or so. I make a pitch and my line just feels heavy so I set the hook hard. It felt like I hooked a log and said so to D. Then the log fought back. After negotiating him out of the pads I put him on the scale and he came in at 4 on the nose. We then each missed a few bites. As the sun was going down we started cranking the edges and Darren grabs another smaller on. I then hooked up with my first ever Mystic pickerel. I didn't even know they were in there until I read a report earlier in the year. I get him to the boat and the lure pops out. I'm totally ok with that. He was pretty big. D catches one more small bass near the dam and I get a big fat shiner near the old dock pilings. I think I'm gonna go back today.

  • Ha, me too! Took me a while to figure that out. Wouldn't leave pads cause I thought they where bass also!! Did pull one out punching pads!

  • They were going crazy under the pads today. I got all excited thinking bass were chasing them but I couldn't buy a bite. Stupid East wind

  • Alewives are a type of Herring. Along with the Alewives are Blueback Herring. Alewives are the bigger ones you see. I think they pretty much run at the same time. There are tons of them this year. Wait till the hatch and the upper and lower will look like its raining.

  • or are they alwives??? Kman would know

  • Seen about a billion herring too

  • This is the second time I've posted a trip and it didn't go to the main board. I didn't have any issues. Wrote it, added pics, finished it no problem. People need to know this stuff
