Sluice Pond Description

This deep, 50-acre pond is located about two miles south of Lynn center. Maximum depth is 63 feet; average depth is approximately 18 feet. Transparency is relatively low, around seven feet. Aquatic vegetation is scant and limited primarily to the shallow northern section. The shoreline is heavily developed with year round homes.
Public access is provided by a city-owned, paved ramp located on the northwestern cove, just off Route 129. The parking lot can accommodate approximately 35 vehicles. Additional parking is available at the nearby Briarcliff Lodge.

The last fisheries survey, conducted in 1982, recorded stocked rainbow and brown trout and ten other species: largemouth bass, chain pickerel, yellow perch, white perch, bluegill, pumpkinseed, black crappie, brown bullhead, American eel and golden shiner. This pond is abundantly stocked with trout, especially rainbows, every spring and fall.

Trout are the name of the game at this pond, and fishing pressure for them is heavy during the spring and early summer. The deep water here may allow some trout to holdover from year to year, but the vast majority is taken in the same year they were stocked. Stillfishing with baits, casting with small spoons and spinners, or trolling near the surface with streamers and small, flashy hardware are all effective techniques in the spring. As the water warms, however, trout fishermen have to get their terminal gear down to depths of 20 to 30 feet or more.
With so much of the fishing pressure directed at trout, the warm water species appear to be underfished. We recorded several nice bass and chain pickerel during the last survey, and the yellow perch and white perch are reportedly abundant and have good average size. These can be readily targeted with jigs and tip-ups in the shallow northern section (or relatively close to shore in the southern section) during the ice-fishing season. Those interested in tournament fishing on this pond should contact the Lynn Fish and Game Club, which regularly sponsors tournaments here.

Sluice Pond has been stocked with tagged trout. If you shall be one of the rare lucky angelrs that's able to land one of them, make sure you call Laura Ippoliti at (781) 596-0317.
