The Neponset River is a river in eastern Massachusetts. The headwaters of the Neponset are at the Neponset Reservoir in Foxborough, near the Gilette Stadium. From there, the Neponset meanders generally northeast for approximately 29 miles to its mouth at Dorchester Bay, near the painted gas tank. The Neponset River forms the southern boundary of the city of Boston through the neighborhoods of Readville, Hyde Park, Mattapan and Dorchester. It also forms the northern border of the city of Quincy. In addition the Neponset touches the towns of Foxborough, Walpole, Sharon, Norwood, Canton, Westwood, Dedham, and Milton. The Neponset River is fed by a drainage area or watershed of approximately 120 square miles. The Neponset River Watershed includes numerous aquifers, wetlands, streams and surrounding upland areas. In addition to the towns listed above, the watershed includes portions of Stoughton, Medfield, Dover, and Randolph. All together, some 330,000 people live in the Neponset River Watershed. Today the Neponset River and is watershed are increasingly being protected, and opened up as a recreational destination for the benefit of local residents. Designed through a community process, the Neponset II Park provides access to the Neponset River Salt Marsh, one of the few remaining extensive salt marshes within the Boston area. Just north of Granite Avenue, three cleaned up former industrial/commercial properties acquired by the Department of Conservation and Recreation are the site for the new Neponset II Park along the existing Neponset River Greenway multi-use trail. The new park provides direct access to the Neponset River for non-motorized boats. Amenities include a dock for non-motorized boats, benches, interpretive signage, spray-fountain for children, drinking fountain, and landscaping. There are parking spaces for visitors and public restrooms in season. The Neponset River Greenway multi-use trail, opened since 2002, goes along the edge of the marsh and is part of the 2 1/2 mile trail from Tenean Beach to Central Avenue in Milton. The trail through the marsh has benches, interpretive signage, and trash barrels.
