Lower Mystic Lake & Mystic River
Tough day today. Got out to Lower Mystic Lake around 7:00AM and while the weather was beautiful, noticed immediately that the Lake level was much higher after the previous evening's rain, easily 6 inches. Water temps were also much cooler than of late, and that made for tough fishing.
Water was pouring out of the lake and heading downstream, which made it tough to fish traditional cover. However, the increase in water volume and current resulted in a ton of lily pads now being submerged, so when I wasn't flipping close in (and out of the current) with a worm, I was tossing a Zoom Super Fluke in pearl out into the current and letting it run over the submerged pads and hydrilla.
Ended up catching a small largemouth close in on the Fluke (it wasn't much bigger than the lure), but lost a really nice largemouth a bit later. Long and skinny of it is that I didn't set the hook well enough and he spit the bait after a few cranks where I thought I had him.
In any event, I closed out the day by going back to a favorite spot and tossing a weighted worm into the current and letting it drag the worm across the bottom. After a good bit of work I managed to pull in the little Smallmouth pictured: Not that big, but it fought quite nicely, and it had really nice color.
