July Beast With Dad- Lunker Landed!!!

So I have been able to do some pretty consistent fishing the last week and a half including the tournament last week at Norton Res., couple solo trips on Boone and a trip with my Dad and Napa. All awesome trips that resulted in some great bass, plenty of 2's a couple 3's and Napa's 4 pounder, mainly fishing top surface during the day with the frog and at night with the jitterbug. I had yet to catch a true beast during that span and I had one more evening to take advantage of so I invited my Dad to head out on Boone for a couple hours.

We hit the water around 6:00pm tonight, both rocking snag proof frogs on the end of our rods. I've been using this brand recently and found the strike to hook up ratio to be top notch due to the big hooks and soft plastic body. We fished a few points the first 20 minutes and came up empty handed. My Dad wanted to move closer to the spot where he had landed his career bass a couple weeks prior so we made our way in closer to the edge of the cove. We were there for about 5 minutes, my Dad working the interior on the shoreline and I decided to throw the frog out into open water with a few scattered pads. After a long retrieve, roughly 25 feet from the boat the explosion I had been searching for erupted on my frog and not more than a second later I snapped my rod back and the BEAST was on. We had the pleasure of seeing the lunker leap out of the water a mere 10 feet from the boat and then started taking drag as I kept the tip up high and line tight. After I pulled the fish off the bottom my Dad got her in the net on the second time and we chuckled at the Pig in the boat. The fish was 22 inches long and weighed in at 5lbs 9 oz's, the second biggest bass of my summer and 2 ounces shy of Ted's bass in that same cove.

We continued to fish and landed a couple more bass, and I missed one solid bass right on the shoreline as it jumped and shook the hook free. It felt good to land a good one in the presence of my Dad and we got back to the my house around 8:00pm to call it night. Big frog bass is by far the most exciting and rewarding catch in my book!

  • Great report and nice fish. Time spent with dad fish or no fish is always time well spent. But when a hog enters the picture it equals memories that last a lifetime.
