Goliath Bass- Career Best
I got out of a meeting earlier than expected and Jen did as well so we headed out on a glass surfaced Lake Boon around 4:30pm to do some fishing. We went to two coves I've wanted to try: with the water temperatures dropping and the shallower depths, occasional stump and patches of lily pads, I figured it would be our best bet for a lunker bass. We started fishing the cove on the right for the first half hour- Jen was using a crawfish bait and I was switching off with the frog and senko. A couple modest nipples but no fish so we decided to shift to the other cove.
We began deep into one side of the cove and after about 5 casts I hooked onto a solid fish using the frog. It was a great fight through the lily pads and muck on top of the water and I was rewarded with a bass in the 2 pound range. After 15 minutes I backed out of that area and we focused on a narrow left pocket of open water surrounded by pads. As we moved I saw a lunker bass jump out of the pads a distance from where we were. In my mind we would shift after just a couple casts to go towards the commotion I had just witnessed. Jen took a break from casting and was looking at email on her phone when I launched a cast with the frog a few feet from the back edge of the pocket. A worked the frog back about 15 feet and as it approached the layer of thick pads a monster breached and sucked the bait in...I snapped my rod back and locked into the fish. With around 50 feet of line left to bring in I said "Babe, please get off the phone and focus on netting this thing." It took a while to get Lawrence to the boat, between the size of the fish, the pads, and thick stick stick grass, I was surpised when she was only a few feet from the boat still secured to the hooks. Jen did a magnificent job netting the Goliath and we let out some WHOOOO's once it was safely in the boat. Physically and mentally drained from the encounter I was quite relieved- we took several photo's and after weighing the bass I realized it was my personal best...6 pounds 4 ounces, an extremely special moment. We let the big guy go and called it a night shortly after. What a day!!!!!!!!
haha thats amazing. i like how relaxed you look with that monster, clearly a seasoned angler.
you seem good at fishing
now that sounds like a great day of fishing
Super report and congrats on the pig. The fall feed-bag is on. Were you tossing the frog on braid and baitcaster. Or was it spinning gear.
