When anglers left their homes in the early morning hours for the second annual Oktoberfish tournament at Lake Cochituate, more than likely, they were leaving in the rain. But, by the time the 40 boat field launched at 7:00am, the rain had stopped, the fog was thin, and the sun was starting to show signs of life. The wind picked up as the day progressed and it remained partly sunny, turning out to be a pretty decent day for fall fishing.
While the fishing day was decent, the catching part of the day turned out to be brutally tough. Of the 37 teams and three individuals, only two limits were brought to the scales, and only one bad hit double digit mark. The colder nights had the water temperature in the mid to upper fifties and the milfoil begun to die off. The beginning of the fall turnover had begun on Lake cochituate and the catching was definitely proof of it.
As in almost tournaments, someone always figures it out. Fishing alone, B.P. Hurding weighed in 10.62 pounds of largemouth bass to claim the Oktoberfish title for 2013. BP caught his on three baits: a ¼ oz. black jig with a hand-poured reefer trailer, a hand-poured white with blue and gold flake fluke type bait, and drop shotting a strike king green pumpkin KVD dream shot worm. B.P. reported catching seven keepers on the day. Including a 4.07 lbs lunker which fell to the drop shot and claimed the big bass prize for the tournament. B P confided to fishing in the South pond in depths of 2 to 20 feet. The win also gives him a free entry into the 2014 Oktoberfish tournament to defend the title. Congratulations BP.
Coming in second place was the team of Craig Neally and Colleen McKay who sifted thru 8 keeper fish to get 5 that weighed 7.89 pounds. Craig was part of the winning team in the 2012 Oktoberfish tournament with partner Al Krause. Al decided to go and chase the four legged variety of game this year, so Craig teamed up with Colleen to make the most of their entry fee. Craig and Colleen flipped 5 inch wacky rigged senkos into the openings of the weeds in 4 to 6 feet of water. They fishes both middle and south pond.
Third place went to the team of Dennis Mueller and Randy Albert with four fish weighing 5.79 lbs. Dennis and Randy threw homemade jigs up shallow in the middle pond top catch their fish.

7th – Tom Beksha and Dan Tavilla 2 fish for 4.11 lbs
