So I love the frog and everything about it except one thing. The silicon band that holds the trailer hook on sucks (insert whatevers clever here). Should I try to snell the hooks together or is there some other more practical solution. There is already 1 too many bass floating around with a huge trailer hook stuck in it's face for my liking so some help would be appreciated!

Question - are you slipping the main hook through the eye of the trailer hook and then slipping the silicon band over the main hook to hold the trailer in place?

The only time I've ever used a trailer hook, I slide the rubber band over the eye of the trailer hook and then hook the primary hook through the trailer eye. It allows the trailer to remain rigid on the primary.

I see two schools of thought on the trailer hook. Some guys like it to swing freely so they use the rubber gasket/tubing to just keep it from backing itself off the main hook. Other guys like the hook to stay in a fixed position and will often use aquarium tubing to hold it in place. You can find examples of both on Youtube.

I'm pretty sure I'm smart enough to put the gasket one after the hook so that's a silly question. Wink The tubing that they give me for it is super cheap and too stretchy.

I think I will try the aquarium tubing and see how that goes!

If anyone has any other ideas let me know.

Appreciate the good humored response. The intent was certainly not to question your smarts but how you were rigging it. It's still not clear to me but it sounds like you like your trailer in a fixed position. Here's a link to a video that shows several different methods.

I don't get easily offended. Thanks for the video! Yeah having it in one fixed place would be nice. The product is actually faulty though. The trailer band is too stretchy and cheap so that if a fish were to thrash just a little he could pull the trailer hook right off.

I have never had a problem with the trailer hook pulling off. The silicone or clear tubing holds the hook in place. I believe your problem is allowing slack in the line. If the line is tight the hook could not pull off even without a piece of tubing.

Tight lines...

Why would you be using a trailer hook on a frog? I only use trailer hooks on spinnerbaits myself. I would think a trailer hook on a frog would get hooked on the pads your trying to go over? I may be missing something so let me know...

completely depends on what frog you are using.

It's not a good frog for heavy pads and vegetation but the little flaps help keep it from tangling most of the time. I tend to like to throw it in light areas of pads near the grass or it does get stuck. I'm not really sure your grasping the issue here. The little tube that they give you is made out of some rubbery material that's too stretchy and slides over the barb.

i have seen small pieces of rubber(stuff that holds window screens in place)being used. it might be possible to close the eye of the hook with pliers just enough to make a difference, providing the hook will alow it . Good luck

The trailer hooks I use come with a clear plastic tubing that is not stretchy at all. What I'm saying is when you have a fish on the line you should not allow any slack in the line. Any fish could easily throw the hook if you give it a chance.

TIGHT LINES!!!

When you're fishing the frog they're either gonna hit it or not. The most important thing is to let the rod load up on the fish before you set the hook. Sometimes you need to figure out the right retrieve but sometimes it just isn't happening
