Just wondering. Anyone use this hook (Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap Weedless 3/0) for wacky rigging worms? If so, do you lose fish on them after catching a few on them? It seems like they work wonderfully right out of the package (like most hooks) but after catching like 5. I start to miss hookups (especially if the bass jumps). I missed 3 consecutive three pound bass one night recently (was so mad, they jumped out and were beautiful big fish).

I stopped using Gamakatsu® Octopus 2/0 Hooks so I could present my wacky worms weedless.

Maybe I should just go back to using the Octopus hooks?

What do you guys think?

It's not the hook imo. You are just having bad luck with your hookset and where the hook is embeding itself on those hooksets.

I tried those when they first came out years ago. it doesn't take long for the weedguard to get mangled up and they seem to get stuck in logs too. I usually use small circle hooks size 2 (not 2/0), no need to set hook and small size doesn't pick up too many weeds.

Interesting. I agree that the weed guards on those Gamakatsu's are almost worthless. I have returned to using the standard Eagle Claw weedless hooks in 1/0 - 3/0. The longer shank protects the line from the pickerel teeth and I seem to get better hook sets through the mouth.

This is the hook I use when I throw senkos and I like it. I think the weedguard is perfect. The only issue I have found is that after a few fish the weedguard starts to slide down the shank of the hook. When that happens I just push it back in place and add a drop of super glue..

Yeah that happens to me too, plus the weedguard gets misshapen after a few fish, plus I have had too many stick baits just fall off the hook at stupid moments, like when I'm putting rods back into holders and such. Perhaps it's the difference of fishing from a kayak, things just happen.

these have much better weed guards and hold up very well. both can be bent back into place if need be after a lot of abuse.

at first i didn't like the hook design but i've never lost a fish on the things.

i actually like these the best

Sam I tried that 1st hook and hated it. I missed like 5-6 fish on it. I thought it would be perfect when I bought it but was dissapointed. I like the 2nd one. I have it in Owners version. Great for a deeper water presentation.

really? i was skeptical b/c of reviews saying the same thing but i've never had a problem so far. i use the 2/0 and 3/0 and haven't lost one. the hook gets them right in the lip and almost curls around it making it hard for them to shake off.

i mostly use the wacky jig head now though. the smallest is light enough to throw in shallow water. it has a pretty slow sink rate.

yeah my issue was the senko would sit right in the narrow bend of the hook and not leave much hook point sticking out. I think mine were 2/0 or 3/0 too. I used them 1 day and now they sit in my "no good" box. Laughing

I use the gammys for wacky rigs in lightly weeded areas with no issues and while I agree its quite annoying when ur worm slides up the the line cause u gotta rip it to get it back down over the weedgiard to the shank. For more heavily weeded areas I use vmc wicked wacky ( both hooks I use size 2 or 1/0 ) I pinch the barbs off them with my pliers to.make catch and release easier and have never had any issues with hook ups other than the vmc's sometimes don't set on smaller fish cause its a Metal wire weedguard but even without barbs I have no issues as long as I make a conciouseffort to keep my rod tip bent while I have a fish on. I love both the vmc and gammys for weedles wacky

Thanks guys for the replies! What I wasn't thinking of though was that I always usually catch my fish in my kayak. I was in my friends canoe and it just didn't feel right (I never miss fish in my kayak). Maybe I was freaked out of the fact I was sitting up higher and therefore fishing in a strange way. Also while I was bringing them up to the canoe they usually jumped off and that's when I lost them (these fish from this pond fight insanely because most people carp fish there)... Very Happy
